UNDERSTANDING YOUR INSTRUMENT PANEL 229 Compass Variance Compass Variance is the difference between magnetic North and geographic North. To allow the compass module to compensate for that difference and ensure accuracy, you can set the variance in the compass module to the zone where the vehicle is located according to the Compass Variance Map. To set the variance, perform the following steps. NOTE: • The default variance setting is Zone 8. When setting the variance, the numbering will wrap around from Zone 15 to Zone 1. • Magnetic materials should be kept away from the top of the instrument panel, as this is where the compass sensor is located. 4
