Before you begin
The backplane is located inside the chassis of the disk
enclosure. Observe the following precautions when
replacing the backplane.
CAUTION:
To avoid damaging backplane components
and LEDs, use care when handling the
backplane.
These procedures require that all drives be
removed from the enclosure and returned to
their original drive bays. If this is not possible,
two people are required to remove the
enclosure from the rack, to prevent bodily
injury.
Parts can be damaged by electrostatic
discharge. Use proper anti-static protection.
Keep parts in electrostatic containers until
needed and ensure you are properly
grounded when touching static-sensitive
components. For more information, see the

NOTE:
Information about this component is also

Verifying component failure
Use the following methods to verify component failure:
Analyze any failure messages received. HP fault
monitoring software provides a recommended
action.
View Onboard Administrator system and device
status displays for Critical, Major, Minor, and
Warning icons. For more information, see the
HP
BladeSystem Onboard Administrator User Guide
.
Check the enclosure status LEDs:
Green
: Normal operation
Amber
: Fault condition
Removing the backplane
1.
Schedule a maintenance window.
2.
Stop all I/O to the enclosure.
3.
Power down the enclosure by pressing and holding
the On/Standby button on the rear of the disk
enclosure until the system power LED changes from
green to amber.
4.
Remove all cabling from the rear of the enclosure.
Ensure all cabling is marked to facilitate re-cabling
later.
5.
Label drives with the drive bay identification labels
included in the replacement kit.
CAUTION:
Reinstalling a drive in a drive
bay other than the one from which it was
removed may cause data loss.
Apply the appropriate drive bay identification label
to the handle of each drive.

Remove all drives from the enclosure.
IMPORTANT:
Remove the drives in
bay-number sequence and place them on
your work surface in the same order. This
ensures that you reinstall the drives in their
original drive bays. Reinstalling drives in
drive bays other than the ones from which
they were removed may cause data loss.
Press the release button on the lever (1) and rotate
the lever to the left (2). Then, pull the drive out of
the drive bay (3).
7.
Loosen the thumbscrews that secure the enclosure
to the front of the rack and remove the enclosure
from the rack.
8.
Remove the top access panel:
a.
Lift the access panel latch (1). The access panel
will slightly disengage from the enclosure.
b.
Slide the access panel to the rear (2) and lift
away from the chassis.
9.
Disengage both I/O modules, to gain access to the
backplane:
a.
Squeeze the button on the bottom of the locking
lever (1) and rotate out the handle (2).
b.
Position one hand under the module, and with
the other hand, pull the module out of the
enclosure (3).
10. Disconnect all cables from the backplane.
