About your HP StorageWorks D2D Backup System
The HP StorageWorks D2D Backup System is a disk-based storage appliance that emulates
up to six tape devices. It can be used to back up a maximum of six host network servers or
PCs. Each tape device is configured as an Ultrium autoloader (or stand-alone Ultrium tape
drive). Autoloaders may be configured with between 8 and 24 slots, which provides
considerable flexibility for a variety of backup rotation schemes.
The HP D2D Backup System is an iSCSI device. This means that the HP D2D Backup
System plugs directly into your network, but it presents devices as directly-attached SCSI
autoloaders to host machines. Each host can see only the backup devices that have been
configured for that particular host.
TIP:
To find out more about autoloaders, example backup strategies and iSCSI, see
the “User Guide” on CD-ROM.

Connect the hardware
1.
Always use the supplied power cord to connect the HP D2D Backup System to the mains
power supply. For detailed safety information, see the Safety Guide on the CD-ROM.
2. Use the supplied network cable to connect to a Gigabit Ethernet network.
To guarantee that the HP D2D Backup System is discovered successfully, install it on the
same subnet as the host machine that will access it. Typical installations have the HP D2D
Backup System connected to the same Gigabit network switch as the host machine that is
carrying out the backups.
See the “User Guide” on the HP StorageWorks Tape CD-ROM for more information about
supported network configurations.
Tape attach (optional)
A half-height internal or an external SCSI or SAS tape drive may be attached directly to your
HP D2D Backup System, allowing you to store backups offsite. To use this facility, you need:
• An HP StorageWorks Ultrium tape device connected directly to your HP D2D Backup
System.
• Please refer to
www.hp.com/go/connect
for a list of all supported host bus adapters
and tape drives.
If the tape drive is not pre-installed, please refer to the tape drive documentation for
installation instructions.
NOTE:
Physical tape drives attached to the HP D2D Backup System are not directly
accessible from the host machine.
Follow the instructions on this poster to connect the hardware. Windows users can
then run the Installation wizard from the HP StorageWorks CD-ROM on each host
machine. Linux users should refer to the Linux Configuration Guide on the CD-ROM.
• The host is the network server or PC that you wish to back up; a maximum of six
may be backed up to the HP D2D Backup System.
• The host machine on which the Installation wizard is run should have Internet
access for installation to complete successfully.
• The HP D2D Backup System should be connected to Gigabit Ethernet. 100 Base-T
Ethernet will limit performance.
• For more detailed information about installing, configuring and using the HP D2D
Backup System, see the “User Guide” on the HP StorageWorks CD-ROM.
