Use Intelligent Provisioning

to deploy HP ProLiant Gen8

servers

SmartStart CDs are not delivered with or

supported on HP ProLiant Gen8 servers

Intelligent Provisioning is a single-server deployment tool embedded in all HP

ProLiant Gen8 servers, and replaces the SmartStart CDs and Smart Update

Firmware DVD shipped with previous generation HP ProLiant servers. The CDs

and DVD do not ship with HP ProLiant Gen8 servers.

Use Intelligent Provisioning for the following:

•

Installing Microsoft Windows, Red Hat and SUSE Linux, and VMware

operating systems

•

Performing maintenance-related tasks such as firmware updates, iLO

configuration, and configuring Smart Array using ACU

To access Intelligent Provisioning, power up the HP ProLiant Gen8 server and

press the

F10

key during system boot. For more information about using

Intelligent Provisioning supplies the

drivers for your operating system

Installing base operating system media does not provide all the drivers for all

devices. Use Intelligent Provisioning to install additional drivers and firmware

(or the latest updates if you have a network connection), and to install the

operating system.

VMware ESX and ESXi installation

require a custom HP image

Installing VMware ESXi or ESX requires a custom HP image, which includes the

drivers for VMware devices not included in the VMware base image. The image

is available on the HP website (http://www.hp.com/go/esxidownload).

Service Pack for ProLiant replaces

ProLiant Support Pack and the Firmware

DVD

While Intelligent Provisioning provides standalone drivers and firmware for a

single server, the Service Pack for ProLiant (SPP) contains ProLiant server and

BladeSystem drivers, systems software, and firmware. The SPP uses HP Smart

Update Manager (HP SUM) to deploy firmware and system software

components on multiple HP ProLiant servers. It replaces the Firmware DVD and

ProLiant Support Pack (PSP). The Firmware DVD V10.10 and PSPs V9.10 were

released as final versions in June 2012.
