10K RPM Disks Fan Notice
This notice addresses the need to use an upgraded fan (blower) with the new 10K RPM disks.
About 10K RPM Disks
In order to maintain the high standards of reliability, it is important to make sure the fans installed in your
disk array are sufficient to cool this high-performance disk drive. The 10K RPM disks require the use of
newer fan (blower) modules. This disk drive has a spindle speed of 10,000 RPM and therefore requires a
more efficient cooling system. All three fans installed at the top of the chassis need to be high-speed fans.
You can tell if you have a high-speed fan by looking at the logo in the front, top left corner of the fan
module (see Figure 1). The high-speed fan has a type of label that is encased inside a bubble of clear
plastic. The older style of fan has a label that lays flat inside the recessed area. If your fans are NOT high-
speed fans, you need to upgrade them. The part number for a replacement fan is A3709B.
NOTE!
Replace fan modules one at a time. If two or more fan modules are removed at
the same time, the array will immediately shut down.
When replacing a fan module, do not leave a fan slot empty for more than ten minutes, or
a “power off pending” error will occur. When a fan slot is empty, the disk array will not be
cooled properly. Without adequate cooling, disk module failures may occur.
