Setting up for communications In order to connect to the Internet, use an online service, or access a network through a dial-up connection, you need: ❖ A modem (one comes with your computer) ❖ A telephone line ❖ A browser or communications program ❖ An Internet Service Provider (ISP) or online service if you plan to use the Internet Connecting the modem to a telephone line Before you can use the modem, you must connect it to a standard voice-grade telephone line. See "Connecting the modem" on page 102. TECHNICAL NOTE: If you are using the telephone line at home, disable Call Waiting before you connect through the modem. Call Waiting interrupts data transmission. Determining the COM port Your modem is connected to one of the computer's COM (communications) ports. The default setting for the modem is COM3.
