Overview HP StoreOnce D2D software released in February 2011 includes significant performance stabilization updates that reduce the disk access overhead of the deduplication process and therefore improve overall system performance. However this performance improvement only applies to D2D virtual - HP D2D | HP D2D Backup System performance with 2.1.01 and 1.1.01 software (EH985 - Page 3
for best performance the replication target appliance should be co-located on the same LAN as the original D2D. 2. Upgrade the firmware on both D2D devices to 2.1.00/1.1.00. 3. Ensure that the D2D to be used as replication target is licensed for replication. 4. Configure a replication mapping - HP D2D | HP D2D Backup System performance with 2.1.01 and 1.1.01 software (EH985 - Page 4
source device. 2. Wait for replication to synchronize the devices. 3. Remove the replication mapping from either the source or target D2D Web Management Interface. The new device on the original appliance now contains the same data as the old device did but will benefit from the improved performance - HP D2D | HP D2D Backup System performance with 2.1.01 and 1.1.01 software (EH985 - Page 5
for Virtual Device Migration Self replication is the process of replicating data between two devices on the same D2D Backup System. This model requires that there is sufficient disk space on the D2D Backup System to hold two copies of the data being migrated but, with 2.1.00 and 1.1.00 software - HP D2D | HP D2D Backup System performance with 2.1.01 and 1.1.01 software (EH985 - Page 6
of the D2D Backup System. 3. Configure a replication mapping using the Replication wizard on the D2D Backup System to allow replication of all data from the source device to the new target device located on the same D2D Backup System. See the HP StoreOnce Backup System user guide for detailed steps - HP D2D | HP D2D Backup System performance with 2.1.01 and 1.1.01 software (EH985 - Page 7
systems; these will become the replacement devices for the migrated data with improved performance. It is not possible to use the same Share or Library names as the original or use the same WWN/Serial numbers for VTL devices. 2 Step 2 - Self replicate to new VTL/Share on the same D2D Backup System - HP D2D | HP D2D Backup System performance with 2.1.01 and 1.1.01 software (EH985 - Page 8
2. Configure new replication mappings using the Replication Wizard on the D2D Backup Systems to allow replication of all data from the source device to the new target device. See the HP StoreOnce Backup System user guide for detailed steps to create a replication mapping for NAS or VTL. 3. Allow - HP D2D | HP D2D Backup System performance with 2.1.01 and 1.1.01 software (EH985 - Page 9
is created after the upgrade to new firmware, so will benefit from the performance enhancements. The D2D Backup System does NOT need to have a replication license installed in order to perform self replication. Note: The following example shows NAS Share migration; a similar process can be followed - HP D2D | HP D2D Backup System performance with 2.1.01 and 1.1.01 software (EH985 - Page 10
the Web Management Interface. 4. Enter the IP address or FQDN (Fully Qualified Domain Name) of the D2D in Target Appliance Address. Note that this is the address of the local system. Addresses of other appliances may not be used because, without a license, the D2D Backup System may only replicate to - HP D2D | HP D2D Backup System performance with 2.1.01 and 1.1.01 software (EH985 - Page 11
5. Upon successful completion the local appliance will be added to the Target Appliances list. 6. Go to the Replication - NAS Mappings page, select the share to be replicated (i.e. the original share with backup data in it) and click Start Replication Wizard. 11 - HP D2D | HP D2D Backup System performance with 2.1.01 and 1.1.01 software (EH985 - Page 12
select the target appliance from a list. This list will only contain the information about the local D2D appliance and will be highlighted already. Click Next. 8. Select the Target Share (this is the new share that was created earlier in the process and is the target for replication) and click Next - HP D2D | HP D2D Backup System performance with 2.1.01 and 1.1.01 software (EH985 - Page 13
data must be replicated to the new device. Once complete, the status will change to Synchronized which means that the same data is present in both shares. (Note that the size on disk may be slightly different due to reporting inaccuracy and a slight difference in deduplication ratio achieved). 10 - HP D2D | HP D2D Backup System performance with 2.1.01 and 1.1.01 software (EH985 - Page 14
deleting the original share to ensure the migration has been successful and that the backup application can access the new share. 12.Once the replication mapping has been removed and the new share configured with the backup application, the original share can be deleted from the NAS - Shares page on - HP D2D | HP D2D Backup System performance with 2.1.01 and 1.1.01 software (EH985 - Page 15
