5-2. Steps to take in an emergency Starting the engine STEP 1 STEP 2 For vehicles with an automatic transmission: Put the shift lever in P and apply the brakes. For vehicles with a manual transmission: Depress the clutch pedal. Hold the electronic key close to the engine switch (within 0.4 in. [10 mm]). Make sure that the button side of the key is facing away from the engine switch. An alarm will sound to indicate that the start function cannot detect the key with the depleted battery if any of the doors will be opened and closed while this operation. For vehicles with an automatic transmission: Press the engine switch within 5 seconds [after the buzzer sounds], keeping the brake pedal depressed. For vehicles with a manual transmission: Press the engine switch within 5 seconds [after the buzzer sounds], keeping the clutch pedal depressed.
