9 VLS Configuration and Backup Application Guidelines To achieve full performance benefits from the VLS, you may need to modify your enterprise backup application configuration (for example, to take advantage of the fact that you can create many more virtual tape drives than a physical tape library holds). If you have enabled deduplication, you may need additional changes in your enterprise backup application to take full advantage of this capacity optimization technology. Follow these guidelines before you begin deduplicating your data or some data may not deduplicate efficiently. SAN Configuration Guidelines For more specific information about the following items, see "LUN Masking and Mapping" (page 40) and "Operating System Tape Configuration" (page 38). • LUN Masking Do not present every virtual drive to every client or media server. Large configurations use LUN masking on the VLS and have dedicated tape drives to each media server with only one media server controlling the robotics. • FC HBA Firmware/Drivers Verify that all SAN switches are supported by the VLS and have current firmware. Verify your configuration with the EBS Matrix available at http://www.hp.com/go/ebs. • Disable FC HBA Target Reset For FC HBAs in the backup servers, disable any that have TARGET RESET mode enabled by default (for example, Qlogic 4Gb PCI-E HBA on Linux). • FC Switches Verify that all SAN switches are supported by the VLS and have current firmware. Verify your configuration with the EBS Matrix available at http://www.hp.com/go/ebs. • Observe HP's Enterprise Backup Solutions best practices for Windows Clients. 1. On Windows Clients, ensure that "Removal Storage Manager" is disabled. See the HP Enterprise Backup Solution design guide available at http://h20000.www2.hp.com/ bc/docs/support/SupportManual/c00775232/c00775232.pdf. 2. Disable Plug and Play Test Unit Ready polling. See the HP Enterprise Backup Solution design guide available at http://h20000.www2.hp.com/bc/docs/support/ SupportManual/c00775232/c00775232.pdf. 3. Disable HP Management Agents Tape Support polling: a. Start HP Management Agents from the Windows Control Panel. b. Verify that the Window title indicates the agent's version is 7.2 or higher. c. Click on the Storage tab and confirm that the check box next to Disable Fibre Agent Tape Support is selected. 4. Disable Microsoft System Center Configuration Manager (SCCM). You will receive the message, "External Event Caused a Rewind" if this is not disabled. • Observe HP's Enterprise Backup Solutions best practices for UNIX/Linux Hosts.
