If the printer is a network printer, check to see if the printer is busy (the scanner cannot send a job to the printer if it is busy), and run the HP JetAdmin software to make sure the printer is correctly configured on the scanner. If you are working with a NetWare print queue, run the NetWare command PCONSOLE to check if the network scanner has been removed from the list of the queue users.
