MAINTENANCE Battery If the battery is too weak to start the engine, it must be recharged. Jumper Cable Use 1. Connect each end of the RED cable to the POSITIVE (+) terminal on each battery, taking care not to short against chassis. 2. Connect one end of the BLACK cable to the NEGATIVE (-) terminal of the fully charged battery. 3. Connect the other end of the BLACK cable to a good CHASSIS GROUND on the mower with the discharged battery, away from the fuel tank and battery. Cleaning the battery and terminals Battery Removal Corrosion and dirt on the battery and terminals can cause the battery to lose power. 1. Lift and rotate the seat fully forward until supported. 2. Remove the bolt and nut from the battery bracket and remove the bracket from the battery. To remove cables, reverse order 1. Remove BLACK cable first from chassis and then from the fully charged battery. 2. Remove RED cable last from both batteries. The mower has a maintenance free battery and does not need servicing. However, periodic charging of the battery with an automotive type battery charger will extend its life. • Keep battery and terminals clean. • Keep battery bolts tight. • See chart for charging times. Using a wrench, disconnect the BLACK battery cable then the RED battery cable. 4. Carefully remove the battery from the mower and clean if required. 5. Rinse the battery with plain water and dry. 6. Clean the terminals and battery cable ends with a wire brush. 7. Install the new battery with terminals in the same position as the old battery. 8. Connect RED battery cable first to positive (+) battery terminal. 9. Connect BLACK grounding cable to negative (-) battery terminal. 10. Fasten the battery in place with bracket removed in Step 2. IMPORTANT INFORMATION Do not open or remove caps or covers. Adding or checking level of electrolyte is not necessary. Always use two wrenches for the terminal screws. CAUTION! Always wear eye protection when around batteries. CAUTION! Lead-acid batteries generate explosive gases. Keep sparks, flame and smoking materials away from batteries. 23
