D. Cleaning/Replacing Air Cleaner Your engine has an air cleaner which helps prevent premature engine wear and failure. NEVER run engine without complete air cleaner installed on engine. Your air cleaner periodically needs to be cleaned or replaced. NOTES ALWAYS inspect filter(s) for discoloration or dirt accumulation. If either is present, see "I. Servicing Paper Filter" instructions. Contact your Authorized TecumsehPower Servicing Dealer for a genuine replacement Air Cleaner. I. Servicing Paper Filter Paper filters cannot be cleaned and must be replaced once a year or every 100 operating hours; more often if used in extremely dusty conditions. Replacement filters are available at an Authorized TecumsehPower Servicing Dealer. Follow the instructions next to the drawing of your air cleaner to remove and replace it. NOTE DO NOT clean or put oil on a paper filter. II. Removal and Installation of Air Cleaner 1. Turn cover counterclockwise to remove. See Figure 34. 2. Remove paper filter from flange. 3. Discard paper filter. 4. Clean cover and flange thoroughly. 5. Insert new paper filter onto flange. See Figure 35. 6. Make sure flat side of air cleaner cover is facing engine housing. See Figure 36. 7. Line up tabs on cover with slots on flange. See Figure 37. 8. Push cover firmly against flange and turn clockwise until cover locks securely in place; Again, cover flat must be facing engine housing for proper operation. 9. 1. Be sure engine is upright and level.	7
2. Unscrew oil fill cap dipstick from oil filler tube and wipe dipstick clean. See Figure 7.	7
3. Screw oil fill cap dipstick back into oil filler tube. Tighten securely.	7
4. Unscrew and remove oil fill cap dipstick from oil filler tube. Note oil level. If oil reading on dipstick is below “ADD” mark, slowly add oil to reach “FULL” level. See Figure 6.	7
5. Screw oil fill cap dipstick back into oil filler tube. Tighten securely.	7
6. Wipe away any spilled oil.	7

3. Clean area around fuel fill cap and remove fuel fill cap. See Figure 7 on page 5. Afterward, continue reading instructions below.	8
4. Using an approved red GASOLINE container, add fuel slowly, being careful to avoid spilling. DO NOT overfill fuel tank. Leave space in the tank to allow fuel to expand without overflowing.	8
5. Replace fuel fill cap securely and wipe up spilled fuel before starting engine. If fuel is spilled DO NOT start engine. Move machine away from area of spillage. Avoid creating any source of ignition until fuel vapors are gone.	8
6. Be sure fuel valve, if present (see equipment manufacturer’s instructions) is open. See Figure 9.	8

A. Checking and Changing Oil	15
1. Carefully disconnect spark plug wire and keep it away from spark plug. See “G. Avoid Accidental Starts” instructions on page 2. See Figures 26 and 27. Afterward, continue reading instructions below.	15

3. Squirt 1oz. (30 ml) of clean engine oil into spark plug hole.	21
4. Cover spark plug hole with rag to prevent fuel from spraying from spark plug hole when starter rope is pulled.	21
5. Grasp starter cord handle:	21
a. Pull starter cord handle out slowly using a full arm stroke.	21
b. Repeat once. (This will distribute oil throughout the cylinder to prevent corrosion during storage.)	21
c. Proceed to Step 7.	21
6. Push starter button or turn ignition switch key to “START” position. Immediately release starter button or turn ignition switch key to “OFF” position. (This will distribute oil throughout the cylinder to prevent corrosion during storage.)	21
7. Remove rag covering spark plug hole.	21
8. Install spark plug.	21
9. Carefully disconnect spark plug wire from grounding post, if provided.	21
10. Connect spark plug wire to spark plug before attempting to start engine.	21
