88 Learning the Basics Using the DVD-ROM or DVD-ROM/CD-RW multifunction drive Caring for CDs and DVDs ❖ Store your discs in their original containers to protect them from scratches and keep them clean. ❖ Never bend a disc or place heavy objects on top of it. ❖ Hold a disc by its outside edge. Fingerprints on the surface of a compact disc can prevent the drive from reading the data properly. ❖ Avoid exposing discs to direct sunlight or extreme heat or cold. ❖ To clean a disc, wipe it from the center outwards (not in a circle) with a clean, dry cloth. If necessary, moisten the cloth with water or a neutral cleaner (not benzine or rubbing alcohol). Let the disc dry completely before inserting it in the drive. Using the DVD-ROM or DVD-ROM/CD-RW multifunction drive Your computer may come with a DVD-ROM or DVD-ROM/ CD-RW multifunction drive that allows you to: ❖ Play prerecorded DVDs ❖ Play prerecorded CDs ❖ Read and write files (including music) to a CDRecordable (CD-R) or CD-ReWritable (CD-RW) disc. CAUTION: Check the disc/disk activity light when you use the DVD-ROM or DVD-ROM/CD-RW drive. Do not press the eject button, disconnect a drive or turn off the computer while the light is glowing. Doing so could damage the CD, DVD or drive.
