136 Exploring Your Options Setting up for communications Setting up for communications Your computer comes with a built-in modem that can be connected to a standard voice-grade telephone line. The modem allows you to: ❖ Access the Internet. ❖ Communicate with your office's local area network (LAN), or a larger corporate wide area network (WAN). For specific information about connecting to a LAN or WAN, consult your network administrator. ❖ Send a fax directly from your computer. To connect to the Internet, use an online service, or communicate across telephone lines with another computer, you need: ❖ A modem (one comes with your computer) ❖ A telephone line ❖ A browser or communications program ❖ An Internet Service Provider (ISP) or online service if you plan to use the Internet NOTE To stay current on the most recent software and hardware options for your computer, and for other product information, be sure to regularly check the Toshiba Web site at accessories.toshiba.com. Determining the COM port Your modem is connected to one of the computer's COM (communications) ports. The default setting for the modem is COM3.
