MAINTENANCE AND ADJUSTMENT
j
Engine Oil
In order for the engine, transmission and clutch
to function properly, maintain the engine oil at the
proper level, and change the oil and oil filter period-
ically.
Not only do dirt and metal particles collect in the
oil, but the oil itself loses its lubricative quality if used
too long.
WARNING
Motorcycle operation with insufficient, de-
teriorated, or contaminated engine oil will
cause accelerated wear and may result in
engine or transmission seizure, accident,
and injury.
Oil Level Inspection
Situate the motorcycle so that it is perpendicular
to the ground.
If the oil has just been changed, start the engine
and run it for several minutes at idle speed. This
fills the oil filter with oil.
Stop the engine and wait several minutes for the
oil to settle.
CAUTION
Racing the engine before the oil reaches ev-
ery part can cause engine seizure.
If the motorcycle has just been used, wait several
minutes for all the oil to drain down.
With the motorcycle held level, unscrew the oil
filler cap/dipstick, wipe the dipstick on the cap dry,
and reinsert it by screwing.
Check the engine oil level on the dipstick. The oil
level should come up between the low and high
level lines on the dipstick.
