Spark Plugs Maintenance Electrode Bridge Electrode Tip Insulator Spark Plug Inspection Tip: Both spark plugs should have the same light or medium tan color deposits on the insulator around the electrode tip. The spark plug electrode tip and bridge should have sharp, square edges. 5. If spark plugs are in good condition and are not due for replacement, clean them with a non-metallic stiff bristle brush, set the gap with a spark plug gap tool, clean the mating surface on the cylinder head, and install the spark plug with a spark plug socket. Reinstall both spark plug wires. Tip: Spark plugs with bright white or sooty black deposits or with damaged insulators or electrodes can indicate engine problems.
