MAINTENANCE Spark Arrester WARNING Failure to heed the following warnings while servicing the spark arrester could result in serious injury or death. • Do not perform clean-out immediately after the engine has been run, as the exhaust system becomes very hot. Serious burns could result from contact with the exhaust components. Allow components to cool sufficiently before proceeding. • Wear eye protection and gloves. • Never operate without the spark arrester. • Never run the engine in an enclosed area. Exhaust contains poisonous carbon monoxide gas that can cause loss of consciousness or death in a very short time. Periodically clean the spark arrester to remove accumulated carbon. A plugged spark arrester will affect engine performance. Clean daily when driving in mud and water. Replace a cracked or damaged arrester before operating. 1. Remove the arrester Arrester retaining bolt and nut. Muffler Screen 2. Remove the arrester from the end of the muffler. 3. Use a non-synthetic brush to clean the arrester screen. A synthetic brush may melt if components are warm. If necessary, blow debris from the screen with compressed air. Nut Bolt 4. Inspect the screen for wear and damage. Replace a worn or damaged screen. 5. Reinstall the arrester. Torque bolt to 9-11 ft. lbs. (12-15 Nm). 100

with the exhaust components. Allow components to cool sufficiently before
proceeding.

retaining bolt and nut.
2.
Remove the arrester
from the end of the
muffler.
3.
Use a non-synthetic
brush to clean the
arrester screen. A syn-
thetic brush may melt if
components are warm.

4.
Inspect the screen for
wear and damage.
Replace a worn or damaged screen.
5.
Reinstall the arrester. Torque bolt to 9-11 ft. lbs. (12-15 Nm).
