Features Controls Starting Your Engin,e Engines start differently. The 8th digit of your Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) shows the code letter or number for your engine. You will find VIN the at the topleft of your instrument panel. (See Vehicle Identification Number in the Index.) Follow the proper steps to start theengine. Automatic Transaxle: Move your shift lever P (Park) or N to (Neutral). Your engine won't start in any other position - that's a safety feature. To restart when you're already moving, use N (Neutral) only. start if the clutch pedal is all the not way down-that's a safety feature. To Start Your Engine: 1. Without pushingthe accelerator pedal, turn your ignitionkey to Start. When the engine starts, let goof the key. The idle speed will go down as your engine gets warm. Key Release Lever (MANUAL TRANSAXLE) NOTICE: Holding your key Start for longer in than 15 seconds at a time will cause your batteryto be drained much sooner. Andthe excessive heat can damage yourstarter motor. 2. If your engine won't start (or starts The ignition key cannot be removed from the ignition unless the key release lever is used. To Remove theKey: Turn the key to the Off position. Press the key release lever while turning the key fromOff to Lock. Keeping your finger on the lever, pullthe key straight NOTICE: Don't try to shift to P (Park) if your Pontiac is moving. If you do, you could damagethe transaxle.
