When to Check Power Steering Fluid The power steering fluid does not need to be checked regularly, unless there is a suspected leak or an unusual noise. If there is fluid loss, have the system inspected and repaired. What to Use To determine what kind of fluid to use, see Recommended Fluids and Lubricants on page 6-12. Always use the proper fluid. Notice: Use of the incorrect fluid may damage the vehicle and the damages may not be covered by the vehicle's warranty. Always use the correct fluid listed in Recommended Fluids and Lubricants on page 6-12. How to Check Power Steering Fluid To check the power steering fluid: 1. Turn the engine off and let it cool down. 2. Clean the top and cap of the reservoir. 3. Remove the cap and wipe the dipstick with a clean rag. 4. Replace the cap and completely tighten. 5. Remove the cap again and check the fluid level on the dipstick. The level should be between the COLD and HOT marks. If necessary, add only enough fluid to bring the level up to the COLD mark. Windshield Washer Fluid What to Use When you need windshield washer fluid, be sure to read the manufacturer's instructions before use. If you will be operating your vehicle in an area where the temperature may fall below freezing, use a fluid that has sufficient protection against freezing. 5-31
