3Com's powerful NETBuilder products let you implement any combination of LAN and WAN connections to meet your needs (see diagram below). Smart Processing is 3Com's commitment to providing the lowest total cost of network ownership by offering robust yet simple LAN-to-WAN solutions. Smart Processing transforms today's complex WAN access into secure, scalable integrated IP-based solutions that deliver: n Security - Seamless access to public or private networks while preserving network integrity. n Control - Powerful Web-based applications for simplified network management. n Scalability - Simple remote office connectivity with predictable network performance and future growth capabilities. n Availability - Embedded reliability to meet the service requirements of every business. NETBuilder II WAN Extender for ISDN or Channelized T1/E1 The T1 version supports 23 channels on each of two interfaces and the E1 version supports 31 channels per interface to support the ISDN Primary Rate Interface (PRI), Switched 56 (not on E1), or channelized connections. IBM SNA Connections To accommodate legacy SNA traffic, NETBuilder II software uses DLSw Version 2 (RFC 2166) to encapsulate SNA traffic and transport over IP networks. Direct attachment of PU T2 (SDLC) controllers is supported as well as many other legacy devices and protocols. FEP NErToBuutieldr er II Extending Network Reach with 3Com's Boundary Routing System Architecture 3Com's Boundary Routing® system architecture lets you add remote sites to your network without adding complexity or administrative costs. The system works in small to midsize remote offices having one LAN segment and one active WAN connection to a main site. Boundary Routing architecture delivers complete routing functionality to each remote location, easily and affordably. Installing a router at the remote site becomes a plug-and-play operation. Software updates and configuration changes are handled transparently over the WAN by a NETBuilder II® router or any other central-site capable NETBuilder® routing platform at the main site. Centrally located administrators manage the routing complexity for many remote sites. Included in the Boundary Routing solution are the SNA boundary routers. These routers provide the same functionality as the other boundary routers, but have been optimized for SNA traffic. The routing architecture automatically prioritizes SNA traffic over other protocol traffic providing predictable SNA performance. With its cost-saving and time-reducing benefits, Boundary Routing architecture is the ideal choice for leveraging administrative expertise in growing organizations. With the DPE, the second processor is dedicated to data compression leaving the main processor to do packet processing. 4
