Replacing the Needle Replacing the Needle Be sure to observe the following precautions concerning the handling of the needle. Failure to observe these precautions is extremely dangerous, for example, if the needle breaks and fragments are dispersed. Be sure to read and carefully follow the instructions below. CAUTION • Only use recommended home sewing machine needles. Use of any other needle may bend the needle or damage the machine. • Never use bent needles. Bent needles can easily break, possibly resulting in injuries. Checking the needle Sewing with a bent needle is extremely dangerous since the needle may break while the machine is being operated. Before using the needle, place the flat side of the needle on a flat surface and check that the distance between the needle and the flat surface is even. GETTING READY Note • Replace the needle in cases such as the four described below: 1 If an unusual sound is produced when the needle enters the fabric while sewing trial stitches at low speed. (The tip of the needle may be broken.) 2 If stitches are skipped. (The needle may be bent.) 3 After completing one project, such as a piece of clothing. 4 After using three full bobbins of thread. B Replacing the needle Use the screwdriver and a needle that has been determined to be straight according to the instructions in "Checking the needle". Do not use a bent needle. Note • Before replacing the needle, cover the hole in the needle plate with fabric or paper to prevent the needle from falling into the machine.
