Shots cannot be taken while the flash is charging. AF-assist Beam • The AF-assist Beam will sometimes emit when the shutter button is pressed halfway to assist focusing in certain conditions, e.g., dark conditions. • The AF-assist Beam can be turned off (p. 49). For example, if animals are your subject, turn off the beam when shooting in the dark to avoid startling them. However, please keep in mind the following facts. - Turning the AF-assist Beam off or shooting in dark places may make it more difficult for the camera to focus. - The red-eye reduction lamp may emit when the flash is set to or even if the AF-assist Beam is turned off. Quick Shot By pressing the shutter button fully without stopping mid-way, you can shoot certain pictures you might have missed otherwise. • Confirm that appears on the LCD monitor before using the Quick Shot function (p. 49). • Hold the camera firmly with both hands since camera shake may become a factor. • It may be impossible to focus on subjects that are closer than approximately 1.5 meters (4.9 ft.). If this happens, press the shutter button halfway to focus and shoot the image. About the Autofocus Function This camera employs AiAF (artificial intelligence autofocus) technology which uses a broad metering field to calculate the focal distance with high precision. It delivers a crisp focus even when the photographic subject is slightly off-center. The AiAF function can be turned off so that the autofocus is metered from a fixed AF frame at the center of the field (p. 75). 44
