ISS Technology Update Volume 7, Number 1 • Solution for branch offices with inadequate physical security • Improved scaling • NUMA (non-uniformed Memory Access) • Ability to optimize I/O processing, specifically storage I/O completion processing via NUMA I/O • Improved hardware caching and higher concurrency • Applicable to most multi-processor systems Key technologies of Microsoft Windows Server 2008 Key technologies of Windows Server 2008 include Windows Hardware Error Architecture (WHEA) and Windows Server Hyper-V CTP. WHEA WHEA is a generic error source discovery mechanism. It provides an infrastructure for handling hardware errors on Windows platforms. The initial implementation of WHEA focuses on platform hardware devices, including processor, memory, cache, and system interconnects such as PCI, PCI-X, and PCI Express. Peripheral device errors remain under the control of their respective device drivers. WHEA includes the following benefits: • A common hardware error record format and error handling flow • A persistence mechanism for preserving error records • A hardware error model based on Event Tracing for Windows (ETW) Windows Server Hyper-V CTP Windows Server Hyper-V CTV is a hypervisor-based software platform for running multiple guest operating systems on a single server. Windows Server Hyper-V CTP offers a robust, scalable hypervisor-based virtualization platform allowing enterprises to provision and manage virtual server workloads. Windows Server Hyper-V CTP is available in conjunction with Windows Server 2008 RC1 OS for 64-bit systems. Administrators desire flexibility in allocating computing resources for specific tasks. Virtualization technologies provide this flexibility by decoupling the hardware from the workload being performed. The Windows Server Hyper-V CTP release download and installation instructions are available on the Microsoft website: www.microsoft.com/windowsserver2008/virtualization/install.mspx. IMPORTANT The release of Windows Server Hyper-V CTP is a beta release and therefore is not recommended for production servers.
