Operation Starting Engine WARNING: Be sure no one other than the operator is standing near the lawn mower while starting engine or operating mower. Never run engine indoors or in enclosed, poorly ventilated areas. Engine exhaust contains carbon monoxide, an odorless and deadly gas. Keep hands, feet, hair and loose clothing away from any moving parts on engine and lawn mower. Before starting the engine, you must determine the type of starting system that is on your engine. Your engine will have one of the following types: • Auto-Choke System: This features an automatic choke that does not have a manual choke or primer. • Primer/Electric Start System: This features a primer on the engine and an electric start switch on the handle. To start your engine, follow the instructions for your type of starting system. Auto-Choke System 1. Standing behind the mower, squeeze the blade control against upper handle. See Figure 5-1. 2. Pull the starter grip lightly until resistance is felt, then pull rapidly to overcome compression, prevent kickback and start engine. Repeat if necessary. IMPORTANT: Do not allow the starter grip to snap back against the engine. Return it gently to prevent damage to the starter. Primer/Electric Start System 1. Push primer 3 times. Wait about two seconds between each push. See Figure 5-2. In temperature below 50°F, prime 5 times. After the engine is warmed up, one prime may be needed for all temperatures. 2. Standing behind the mower, squeeze and hold the blade control against upper handle. 3. Electric Start: Turn ignition key to the right to start the 3 engine. Release the key after the engine starts. Recoil Start: Pull the recoil starter lightly until resistance is felt, then pull rapidly to overcome compression, prevent kickback, and start the engine. Repeat if necessary. See Figure 5-2. IMPORTANT: Do not allow the recoil starter to snap back against the rope guide. If engine does not start, it may be necessary to re-prime the engine. 5 1 2 Figure 5-1 2 1 3 Figure 5-2 14
