TUNING GEARS Adjustable Some Fender guitars and basses are equipped with tuning gears on which you can adjust the tension. To loosen the tension (making the tuning gears easier to turn), simply use a screwdriver to turn the screw on the end of the tuning button counterclockwise. Turn the same screw clockwise to tighten the tension on the tuning gear (making it more difficult to turn). Caution: Too little tension on the tuning gears causes the strings to slip out of tune. Locking Several guitars are equipped with locking keys that also feature "zero" string backlash. These unique keys provide a positive string lock to the post (with minimal string wrap) that keeps the guitar in tune during tremolo use. Fender uses two types of locking keys (Fig.3 & 4): SPERZEL: Fig. 3 TIGHTEN CLOCKWISE STRING )OCKING BUTTON STRING POST LOOSEN COUNTERCLOCKWISE SCHALLER: Fig. 4 STRING LOCKING BUTTON TIGHTEN CLOCKWISE STRING LOCKING PIN STRING POST WASHER STRING POST STRING POST COLLAR LOOSEN COUNTERCLOCKWISE 6
