Important Information This document provides important information about: • Upgrading or repairing memory. • Removing the hard disk drive partition. Please review this information and keep it with your PC documentation. Upgrading or repairing memory Your PC uses dual data rate (DDR) memory modules in dual-channel mode for the central processing unit (CPU) memory. The memory consists of identical pairs of DDR memory modules seated in sockets on the motherboard. Your PC has four memory sockets. Some motherboard memory sockets are arranged so that the memory pairs are adjacent to each other; most motherboard memory socket pairs are not adjacent. When replacing or adding memory, use module pairs that are identical in type and size. NOTE: When a memory module does not match the module in the paired socket, the PC does not recognize the memory. As a result, your PC does not use either module, and it may not operate. To identify the type of memory, the number of sockets on your motherboard, and the maximum amount of memory capacity, refer to the motherboard documentation that came with your PC, or look at the specifications for your model PC on the Support Web site; refer to your Warranty and Support Guide for the Support Web site information. Removing the hard disk drive partition Your PC contains the system recovery image in a partition area of the hard disk drive. The system recovery image is the operating system, drivers, and application software originally installed on the PC at the factory. To recover your operating system and make future software repairs, use the system recovery disc (a DVD) and the Compaq Recovery Tools CD included in the accessory box. To increase space for data storage on your hard disk drive, you can remove the system recovery partition from the hard disk drive. To do so, use the Compaq Recovery Tools CD: 1 Click Start on the taskbar. 2 Choose All Programs. 3 Choose PC Help & Tools. 4 Click Compaq Recovery Tools CD. The Recovery Tools CD window appears. 5 Choose Start the Recovery Tools CD, insert the Compaq Recovery Tools CD into the PC, and then click OK. The PC restarts from the tools CD; wait for the next prompt. 6 Choose Remove system recovery partition and click Next. 7 Follow the onscreen instructions to complete removal of the partition. For more information, including steps to use the system recovery DVD, refer to "Recovering from Software Problems" in the Warranty and Support Guide. Printed in
