It is never wasted; servers will almost always perform better with more memory. Additional memory enables the operating system to cache programs and data in the memory subsystem. As the amount of available system memory increases, more data can be cached, which reduces the frequency at which the processor will need to access the much slower hard disk. Reduced hard disk usage in turn results in significantly improved system performance and reliability. How Much Memory Do You Need? HP provides the information in Table 1 as a guide to help you gauge your memory needs for new systems. Depending on your particular application and operating environment, your memory needs may surpass the levels suggested below. Table 1 assumes the use of Microsoft® Windows NT® operating system or a similarly demanding NOS. Table 1.
