Fan/heat sink assembly, Loosen the captive screws

Page 90 highlights

Reverse this procedure to install the system board. Fan/heat sink assembly NOTE: The fan/heat sink assembly spare part kit includes replacement thermal material. Description For use only on computer models equipped with an AMD processor For use only on computer models equipped with an Intel processor Spare part number 606889-001 607590-001 NOTE: To properly ventilate the computer, allow at least 7.6 cm (3 in) of clearance on the left side of the computer. The computer uses an electric fan for ventilation. The fan is controlled by a temperature sensor and is designed to turn on automatically when high temperature conditions exist. These conditions are affected by high external temperatures, system power consumption, power management/battery conservation configurations, battery fast charging, and software requirements. Exhaust air is displaced through the ventilation grill located on the left side of the computer. Before removing the fan/heat sink assembly, follow these steps: 1. Memory module/wireless module compartment cover (see Memory module on page 50) 2. Hard drive (see Hard drive on page 58) 3. Optical drive (see Top cover on page 67) 4. Keyboard (see Keyboard on page 64) 5. Top cover (see Top cover on page 67) 6. System board (see System board on page 76) Remove the fan/heat sink assembly: 1. Turn the system board upside down with the front toward you. 2. Disconnect the fan cable (1) from the system board. 3. Loosen the captive screws (2) and (3) that secure the fan/heat sink assembly to the system board. NOTE: The number of captive screws securing the fan/heat sink assembly to the system board vary by computer model. Computer models equipped with a graphics subsystem with discrete memory have seven captive screws securing the fan/heat sink assembly to the system board, as shown in the first illustration below. Computer models equipped with a graphics subsystem with UMA memory have five captive screws securing the fan/heat sink assembly to the system board, as shown in the second illustration below. 80 Chapter 4 Removal and replacement procedures

NOTE:
To properly ventilate the computer, allow at least 7.6 cm (3 in) of clearance on the left side of
the computer. The computer uses an electric fan for ventilation. The fan is controlled by a temperature
sensor and is designed to turn on automatically when high temperature conditions exist. These
conditions are affected by high external temperatures, system power consumption, power
management/battery conservation configurations, battery fast charging, and software requirements.
Exhaust air is displaced through the ventilation grill located on the left side of the computer.
Before removing the fan/heat sink assembly, follow these steps:
1.
Memory module/wireless module compartment cover (see
Memory module
on page
50
)
2.
Hard drive (see
Hard drive
on page
58
)
3.
Optical drive (see

)
Remove the fan/heat sink assembly:
1.
Turn the system board upside down with the front toward you.
2.
Disconnect the fan cable
(1)
from the system board.
3.
Loosen the captive screws
(2)
and
(3)
that secure the fan/heat sink assembly to the system board.
NOTE:
The number of captive screws securing the fan/heat sink assembly to the system board
vary by computer model. Computer models equipped with a graphics subsystem with discrete
memory have seven captive screws securing the fan/heat sink assembly to the system board, as
shown in the first illustration below. Computer models equipped with a graphics subsystem with
UMA memory have five captive screws securing the fan/heat sink assembly to the system board,
as shown in the second illustration below.
