ISS Technology Update Volume 7, Number 1 ProLiant management tip of the month Upgrading to HP Systems Insight Manager 5.2 on Microsoft® Windows® In a previous Management Tip, "Best Practices 1-2-3 for installing HP SIM on a Windows CMS," we determined that the best installation experience for HP Systems Insight Manager (HP SIM) was to use the Insight Control Management DVD because it has an analysis pre-installation utility called the ICE Advisor that can indicate whether or not pre-requisites are present for the installation. Well, that is equally true for upgrading as well. Along with the introduction of HP SIM 5.2 come some distribution changes. There are now multiple methods for performing the installation: • Method 1: Use the Management CD packaged with ProLiant servers in the ProLiant Essentials Foundation Pack • Method 2: Download an ISO image file of the Management CD from www.hp.com/go/hpsim Æ Download Æ "Download ISO image of Management CD" • Method 3: Download the HP SIM installation package from www.hp.com/go/hpsim Æ Download Æ "HP SIM - Windows" • Method 4: Use the Insight Control Management DVD from the media kit bundled with BladeSystem enclosures or ordered online • Method 5: Download an ISO image file of the Insight Control Management DVD from www.hp.com/go/proliantessentials Æ "Try Insight Control" Much of what is new in HP SIM 5.2 is not outwardly visible-the emphasis on this release was to improve usability and the user interface-but there are several changes internally to increase responsiveness and robustness (for more discussion on what is new in HP SIM 5.2, visit the Infrastructure Software Blog at www.hp.com/blogs/managementsoftware). As a result, most HP SIM plug-ins will need to be updated to be compatible with HP SIM 5.2. The easiest way to do this is to perform the HP SIM installation/upgrade using either Method 4 or 5. If using Method 1, 2, or 3, at the completion of the HP SIM installation, you may not be able to use any of the ProLiant Essentials/Insight Control applications that plug in to HP SIM until you upgrade them as well (this includes the ProLiant Essentials Performance Management Pack and Vulnerability & Patch Management Pack). However, if you use Method 4 or 5, all of the packages dependent on HP SIM are upgraded to a compatible level during the installation. ProLiant management tip of the month
Upgrading to HP Systems Insight Manager 5.2 on Microsoft® Windows®
In a previous Management Tip, “
Best Practices 1-2-3 for installing HP SIM on a Windows CMS
,” we determined that the best
installation experience for HP Systems Insight Manager (HP SIM) was to use the Insight Control Management DVD because it
has an analysis pre-installation utility called the ICE Advisor that can indicate whether or not pre-requisites are present for the
installation. Well, that is equally true for upgrading as well.
Along with the introduction of HP SIM 5.2 come some distribution changes. There are now multiple methods for performing the
installation:
Method 1: Use the Management CD packaged with ProLiant servers in the ProLiant Essentials Foundation Pack
Method 2: Download an ISO image file of the Management CD from
www.hp.com/go/hpsim
Download
“Download
ISO image of Management CD”
Method 3: Download the HP SIM installation package from
www.hp.com/go/hpsim
Download
“HP SIM – Windows”
Method 4: Use the Insight Control Management DVD from the media kit bundled with BladeSystem enclosures or ordered
online
Method 5: Download an ISO image file of the Insight Control Management DVD from
www.hp.com/go/proliantessentials
“Try Insight Control”
Much of what is new in HP SIM 5.2 is not outwardly visible—the emphasis on this release was to improve usability and the user
interface—but there are several changes internally to increase responsiveness and robustness (for more discussion on what is
new in HP SIM 5.2, visit the Infrastructure Software Blog at
www.hp.com/blogs/managementsoftware
). As a result, most HP
SIM plug-ins will need to be updated to be compatible with HP SIM 5.2. The easiest way to do this is to perform the HP SIM
installation/upgrade using either Method 4 or 5.
If using Method 1, 2, or 3, at the completion of the HP SIM installation, you may not be able to use any of the ProLiant
Essentials/Insight Control applications that plug in to HP SIM until you upgrade them as well (this includes the ProLiant
Essentials Performance Management Pack and Vulnerability & Patch Management Pack). However, if you use Method 4 or 5,
all of the packages dependent on HP SIM are upgraded to a compatible level during the installation.
