Page 4 highlights

Step 7: Configure your system Upgrade to active/active The MSA1510i Support CD guides you through the process of upgrading the MSA1510i from the factory-installed active/passive firmware to active/active firmware. For a new MSA1510i, perform these upgrades before configuring the storage. The following steps are executed from the CD: • Obtaining the latest versions of Microsoft iSCSI initiator software, multipathing software, and Device Specific Module (DSM) • Uninstalling previous versions of Microsoft and HP initiator and multipathing components • Installing the new Microsoft components • Updating MSA firmware NOTE: Windows and VMware use the CD differently. For more information, see information provided on the CD. >>> The MSA1510i Support CD, v2.0 or later, is available on the MSA1510i support page: http://www.hp.com/support. The MSA1510i installation and user guide provides additional detail on configuring your system and is included on the CD.

Upgrade to active/active
The MSA1510i Support CD guides you through the process of upgrading
the MSA1510i from the factory-installed active/passive
rmware to
active/active
rmware. For a new MSA1510i, perform these upgrades
before con
guring the storage. The following steps are executed from
the CD:
Obtaining the latest versions of Microsoft iSCSI initiator software,
multipathing software, and Device Speci
c Module (DSM)
Uninstalling previous versions of Microsoft and HP initiator and
multipathing components
Installing the new Microsoft components
Updating MSA

NOTE:
Windows and VMware use the CD differently. For more
information, see information provided on the CD.

Con
gure the MSA1510i
Two user interfaces are available for con
guring the MSA1510i and
its storage; use the interface with which you think you will be most
comfortable:
HP Storage Management Utility (SMU)—a Graphical User Interface,
with tabs, windows, and prompts for entering or changing
con
guration information.
MSA1510i Command Line Interface (CLI)—a command-driven
interface, provided for system administrators who prefer this method
of system management over a Graphical User Interface
Regardless of the interface, common con
guration tasks include:
Con
guring the physical hard drives into logical storage units
Con
guring iSCSI management and IP settings
Con
guring iSCSI storage (target) settings
Con
gure the host (initiator)
Each operating system uses unique initiator and multipathing software
and/or drivers.
Con
guration procedures vary, but may include the following:
Enabling discovery of the targets that you want the initiator to access
(the IP address and TCP portal of each MSA1510i storage target)
Con
rming (testing) discovery of the targets
Con
guring target logon settings, including the following:
Automatically restoring the connections when the system boots
Enabling multipathing
Make sure that you enter the Initiator settings in the SMU or MSA-CLI,
including the Initiator iSCSI node name (iqn format) and any security
settings for Login Authentication using CHAP and Access Controls.
Step
8
: Capture an electronic copy of
the con
guration
After the system is con
gured, save a copy of your settings using one
or both of the following:
SMU—Diagnose tab diagnostic report (saved in an .xml
le format)
MSA-CLI—
show tech_support
command (saved in a .txt
le
format)
Key best practices
Consider reading the
HP SAN design guide
. This guide contains
useful information about setting up and managing iSCSI and Fibre
Channel networks and is available on the HP SAN Infrastructure

Operate the MSA1510i in a dedicated iSCSILAN, to isolate the
iSCSI network from corporate and external networks (strongly
recommended).
Assign static IP address to devices in the network, including the
MSA1510i.
Use only 1000BaseT Ethernet NICs and switches throughout the
network.
Use quali
ed Category 5e (or better) Ethernet cables throughout
the network.
If more than one server will access the MSA1510i, protect the system
from unauthorized or accidental access by:
Setting up VLANs to control initiator access to the targets.
Enabling mutual initiator and target iSCSI CHAP authentication.
Creating Access Control Lists (ACL) to control access at the LUN
level.
Draw physical and logical diagrams of your network.
Maintain detailed records of your iSCSI storage network, including
information about the initiators, targets (including which LUNs are
mapped to the targets), IP address assignments, portals, and portal
groups. Note the path of each initiator to its target (the portal
group, portals, and IP address it uses) and the ACL and VLAN that
is providing protection.
Review messages on the MSA1510i controller LCD panel periodically,
to monitor the status ofyour MSA1510i.
