principal switch In a multiswitch fabric, the switch that allocates domain IDs to itself and to all other switches in the fabric. There is always one principal switch in a fabric. If a switch is not connected to any other switches, it acts as its own principal switch. product name User-configurable identifier assigned to a managed product. Typically, this name is stored on the product itself. For the HP Surestore Director FC-64, the product name can also be accessed by an SNMP manager as the system name. R R_A_TOV See resource allocation time-out value. redundancy Performance characteristic of a system or product whose integral components are backed up by identical components to which operations will automatically failover in the event of a component failure. Redundancy is a vital characteristic of virtually all high-availability (24 hr./7 days per week) computer systems and networks. remote access link Connection to a device or program on a computer network through a (geographically) remote workstation. remote notification A process by which a system is able to inform remote users and/or workstations of certain classes of events that occur on the system. E-mail notification and the configuration of SNMP trap recipients are two examples of remote notification programs that can be implemented on director-class switches. remote user workstation Workstation, such as a PC, using HP EFC Manager, Product Manager, and Fabric Manager applications that can access the HP EFC Server over a LAN connection.
