Glossary ACPI Advanced Configuration and Power Interface blue screen A blue screen (or BSOD, Blue Screen Of Death) is a screen with a blue background that appears when a Windowsbased computer crashes boot loader The first program to execute when a system is booted. BOOTP Bootstrap Protocol CVOL Client Volume Overlay. Changes made by a user to a virtual disk are written to a cache file called a CVOL file on the server. CVOLCompactor Tool A tool which allows you to reduce the size of an overlay file. CVOLMerge Tool A tool which enables you to create a new hard disk image file from an existing image and one or more overlay files. The tool also allows you to update an existing image with the content of an overlay file. DHCP Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol. This protocol allows for a server to specify pre-boot values to a networkattached system. disk signature A unique identification value written on Windows disk drives. domain credentials The credentials maintained in a Windows domain between each of the member workstations and servers and the domain crontrollers. FLEXnet A software protection system controlling product activation and executable wrapping. HAL Hardware Abstraction Layer. An abstraction layer, implemented in software, between the physical hardware of a computer and the software that runs on that computer. Its function is to hide differences in hardware from most of the operating system kernel, so that most of the kernel-mode code does not need to be changed to run on systems with different hardware.
