Problem Motor operates for long periods or cycles on and off frequently (Modern refrigerators with more storage space and a larger freezer require more operating time. They start and stop often to maintain even temperatures.) Refrigerator or freezer compartment too warm Frost or ice crystals on frozen food (frost within package is normal) Frequent "buzzing" sound Small or hollow cubes Automatic icemaker does not work (on some models) Possible Causes Normal when refrigerator is first plugged in. Often occurs when large amounts of food are placed in refrigerator. Door left open. Hot weather or frequent door openings. Temperature controls set at the coldest setting. Temperature control not set cold enough. Warm weather or frequent door openings. Door left open. Freezer door popped open. Door left open. Too frequent or too long door openings. Food blocking freezer air vents. Icemaker power switch is in the I (on) position, but the water supply to the refrigerator has not been connected. Water filter clogged. Icemaker power switch is not on. Water supply turned off or not connected. Freezer compartment too warm. Piled up cubes in the storage bin cause the icemaker to shut off. What To Do • Wait 24 hours for the refrigerator to completely cool down. • This is normal. • Check to see if package is holding door open. • This is normal. • See About the controls. • See About the controls. • Set the temperature control one step colder. See About the controls. • Check to see if package is holding door open. • See the problem Freezer door pops open when refrigerator door is closed. • Check to see if package is holding door open. • Move items away from the back wall of the freezer. • On power switch models, set the power switch to the O (off) position. On feeler arm models, move the feeler arm to the STOP (up) position. Keeping the power switch in the I (on) position or the feeler arm in the ON (down) position will damage the water valve. • Replace filter cartridge with new cartridge or with plug. • On power switch models, set the power switch to the I (on) position. On feeler arm models, move the feeler arm to the ON (down) position. • See Installing the water line. • Wait 24 hours for the refrigerator to completely cool down. • Level cubes by hand. Ice cubes have odor/taste Slow ice cube freezing Moisture forms on cabinet surface between the doors Refrigerator has odor Refrigerator compartment light does not work 20 Ice cubes stuck in icemaker. (Green power light on icemaker blinking.) Ice storage bin needs cleaning. Food transmitting odor/taste to ice cubes. Interior of refrigerator needs cleaning. Door left open. Temperature control not set cold enough. Not unusual during periods of high humidity. Foods transmitting odor to refrigerator. Interior needs cleaning. No power at outlet. Light bulb burned out or loose. • Turn off the icemaker, remove cubes and turn the icemaker back on. • Empty and wash bin. Discard old cubes. • Wrap foods well. • See Care and cleaning. • Check to see if package is holding door open. • See About the controls. • A newly installed refrigerator may take 12-24 hours to begin making ice cubes. • Wipe surface dry; then adjust the fresh food control setting one number higher and check again in 24 hours. • Foods with strong odors should be tightly wrapped. • Keep an open box of baking soda in the refrigerator; replace every three months. • See Care and cleaning. • Replace fuse or reset the breaker. • See Replacing the light bulbs.
