INSTRUCTION SHEET for 242905 Canning Surface Element Kit NOTE: Approved for use, beginning with Whirlpool RDE series and later electric range models, to replace originally equipped 8" diameter surface element. When using this kit on models that have surface element hold down clips, the canning element support must be placed on the left or right of the clip. (The support will not fit in the clip.) This 8" diameter surface element is constructed with a heavy-duty support frame, and the coiled element surface is 1⁄4" higher than the originally equipped element. The element is for use with large, heavy cooking utensils on high heat setting which will provide - • Improved heat dissipation. • Help prevent damage to reflector bowls, burner box, switch modules, adjacent counter-tops and cabinets. Applications include canning and food preparations requiring lengthy cooking times. WARNING Electrical Shock Hazard Disconnect power before servicing. Replace all parts and panels before operating. Failure to do so can result in death or electrical shock. Surface Element Installation Procedure 1. Disconnect power or unplug range. 2. If only one (1) heavy-duty element is to be installed, select the desired location. 3. Remove the original 8" diameter surface element. 4. Install the 8" diameter heavy-duty surface element. NOTE: The surface element removed from the range may be an 1800-watt or 2100-watt element rated at 240 volts(check electrical rating stamped on element frame). It is important the appropriate infinite switch be removed from the range and replaced with the switch furnished with this kit. If the infinite switch is not replaced, it will cause premature failure due to unmatched switch wattage/amperage rating with the 2600-watt, heavy-duty surface element. Infinite Switch Installation Procedure NOTE: This is a non push-to-turn infinite switch provided. Take element removed from range and determine the wattage rating at 240 volts stamped on the frame. Element rated 2600 watts/240 volts - PROCEED TO SECTION A Element rated 1800 watts or 2100 watts/240 volts - PROCEED TO SECTION B SECTION B (originally equipped 1800-watt or 2100-watt/240-volt surface element) 1. One (1) of the three (3) types of infinite switches is in the range. See Figure 1. NOTE: If it is equipped with a Robertshaw switch, it is not necessary to replace with the Robertshaw switch provided. Discard the switch, mounting hardware and label in kit. If it is equipped with either a Corox or King-Seeley switch, the switch MUST be removed and replaced with the Robertshaw switch provided. COROX BRAND KING-SEELEY BRAND ROBERTSHAW BRAND figure 1 2. The Robertshaw switch provided is a universal type switch. The shaft must be cut to appropriate length, and appropriate shaft adapters are required. 3. Take the switch removed from the range and measure the shaft length from mounting surface. See Figure 2. Measure this portion SECTION A (originally equipped 2600-watt/240-volt surface element) 1. It will not be necessary to replace the infinite switch. 2. Disregard the switch, mounting hardware and label provided in this kit. Instruction Sheet 242919 Rev.
