Using printer menus Menu item NPA Mode Serial Buffer Job Buffering Serial Protocol Robust XON Purpose Values Specifies whether the printer performs the special processing required for bidirectional communication, following the conventions defined in the Network Printing Alliance (NPA) Protocol. Note: Changing this menu item automatically resets the printer. On Off *Auto Printer performs NPA processing. If data is not in NPA format, it is rejected as bad data. Printer does not perform NPA processing. Printer examines the data to determine the format and then processes it appropriately. Configures the size of the serial input buffer. Note: Changing the Serial Buffer menu item automatically resets the printer. Disabled *Auto Disables job buffering. Any jobs already buffered on the disk are printed before normal processing of incoming jobs resumes. Printer automatically calculates the Serial Buffer size (recommended setting). 3K to maximum size allowed (1K increments) User specifies the Serial Buffer size. The maximum size depends on the amount of memory in the printer, the size of the other link buffers, and whether Resource Save is set to On or Off. To maximize the range for the Serial Buffer size, disable or reduce the size of the parallel and USB buffers. Temporarily stores jobs on the printer hard disk before printing. Note: Changing the Job Buffering menu item automatically resets the printer. *Off On Auto Does not buffer print jobs to the hard disk. Buffers print jobs to the hard disk. Buffers print jobs only if the printer is busy processing data from another input port. Selects the hardware and software *DTR handshaking values for the serial interface. DTR/DSR Hardware handshaking. Hardware handshaking. XON/XOFF Software handshaking. XON/XOFF/DTR Combined hardware and software handshaking. XONXOFF/DTRDSR Combined hardware and software handshaking. Determines whether the printer *Off communicates availability to the computer. This menu item only applies to the On serial port if Serial Protocol is set to XON/XOFF. Printer waits to receive data from the computer. Printer sends a continuous stream of XONs to the host computer to indicate that the serial port is ready to receive more data. Menu Groups 39
