ESPRESSO MACHINE PROBLEMS AND CAUSES Your MR. COFFEE® Coffeemaker has been carefully designed to give you many years of trouble-free service. In the unlikely event that your new coffeemaker does not operate satisfactorily, please review the following potential problems and try the steps recommended BEFORE you call an Authorized Sunbeam Service Center. PROBLEM POSSIBLE CAUSE SOLUTION Coffee does not come out • No water in Reservoir • Coffee grind is too fine • Too much coffee in the Filter • Cap is not secure, steam is escaping • Appliance not turned on or plugged in • Coffee has been tamped / compressed too much • Add water to Water Reservoir • Grind coffee to medium ground • F ill Filter only to 4-cup mark • Tighten cap • Plug in Power Cord • R efill Filter with Espresso Ground coffee and GENTLY tamp Coffee comes out around the edge of the Filter Holder • Filter Holder not rotated to Lock Position • Coffee grounds around edge of basket rim • Too much coffee in the filter basket • R otate Filter Holder to Full Lock Position • W ipe off excess grounds from rim of Filter • F ill Filter only to 4-cup mark Unable to steam • Water Reservoir is empty • Unit is not turned on • Frothing Arm is blocked Milk is not foamy after frothing • Not enough water in Water Reservoir to Steam • Milk is not cold • Whole milk Coffee comes • Coffee is ground too coarse out too quickly • Not enough coffee in the Filter • Add water to Water Reservoir • Fill only to 4 cup mark • F ill Filter following Ingredient & Measuring guide • P lug in power cord. Slowly turn Control Knob to STEAM position • Following frothing stage, operate frothing function for 1 - 2 seconds to extract excess milk. The amounts shown below are suggested amounts. TO BREW USE THIS AMOUNT OF GROUND COFFEE 10 cups 7.5 tablespoons 8 cups 6.5 tablespoons 6 cups 4.5 tablespoons 4 cups 3 tablespoons Note: Soft Water Usage In some cases, the combination of soft water with decaffeinated coffee may cause the coffeemaker to overflow. It is recommended to either reduce the amount of ground coffee used or to brew fewer cups of coffee at a time. HOW TO BREW COFFEE 1. Open the lid and insert the permanent filter included or a 10-12 cup cone paper filter in the removable filter basket. 2. Add the desired amount of ground coffee to the filter, making sure the grounds are level in the filter. 3. Fill the reservoir with the desired amount of water. 4. Place the carafe on the warming plate. Make sure the carafe is accurately centered on the warming plate or the water and grounds will overflow from the brew basket. 5. To begin brewing, press the switch to ON. The ON/OFF switch will light, indicating that the coffeemaker is on and the brew cycle will begin. When the coffee stops flowing, the brew cycle is complete. While the coffee is brewing, the Pause 'n Serve feature allows you to sneak a cup of coffee from the carafe. REPLACE THE Carafe ON THE WARMING PLATE WITHIN 30 SECONDS TO PREVENT OVERFLOW AND POSSIBLE INJURY. If the brew basket overflows or fails to empty into the carafe, do not open the brew basket. Unplug the coffeemaker and wait for the contents to cool before handling. The problem is most likely the filter basket not being locked into the appliance. See Step 8 below for more information. 6. To turn off the coffeemaker, press the switch to Off. 11
