n Close Up Use for close-up shots of flowers, insects, and other small objects (a macro lens can be used to focus at very close ranges). The camera automatically focuses on the subject in the center focus point. Use of a tripod is recommended to prevent blur. s m Sports High shutter speeds freeze motion for dynamic sports shots in which the main subject stands out clearly. The built-in flash and AF-assist illuminator turn off automatically. o Night Portrait Use for a natural balance between the main subject and the background in portraits taken under low light. Use of a tripod is recommended to prevent blur. A Focus Point At default settings, the camera selects the focus point as follows: • k, l, and o modes: The camera selects the focus point automatically. • n mode: The camera focuses on the subject in the center focus point. Other focus points can be selected with the multi selector (pg. 56). • m mode: The camera focuses continuously while the shutter-release button is pressed halfway, tracking the subject in the center focus point. If the subject leaves the center focus point, the camera will continue to focus based on information from the other focus points. The starting focus point can be selected with the multi selector (pg. 56). A The Built-in Flash If additional lighting is required for correct exposure in k, n, or o mode, the built-in flash will pop automatically when the shutter-release button is pressed halfway. 42
