In other areas, you need to contact the service provider before the system can recognize your phone. The operator needs to know your phone number, your phone's ESN (electronic serial number), and how you plan to pay for your calls. There is normally an additional charge for roaming calls. Note: The ESN of your phone is located under the battery of the phone. (However, the ESN of your phone can normally be read over the air by the roaming cellular service providers when you call them to register your roaming presence on their cellular network.)
