H.264 is also known as MPEG-4 AVC and is currently one of the most commonly used formats for the recording, compression and distribution of high definition video. H.264 offers better quality at lower files sizes than both MPEG-2 and MPEG-4. MPEG-4 is a Wavelet-based file that delivers professional quality audio and video streams over a wide range of bandwidths. Defined by the Moving Pictures Expert Group (MPEG) and was standardized in October 1998. JPEG is the standard for compressing still images.
