4 English www.pioneerelectronics.com/Home SETTING UP FOR DOLBY ATMOS While your new Pioneer speakers will work in any stereo or home theater system, we designed them especially for use in Dolby Atmos enabled sound systems. Atmos is an "immersive audio" technology developed by Dolby to add new realism to movie and music sound. It adds additional channels to the audio system to create a more enveloping effect. In commercial cinemas, Dolby Atmos systems use height speakers mounted on the ceiling. However, this is impractical for most homes, so with Dolby's guidance, we have incorporated the height speakers into the top panels of your SP-BS22A-LR speakers. These top-mounted drivers bounce sound off your ceiling to create more dramatic surround-sound effects. An extra pair of binding posts is provided so you can connect these speakers to the separate channels of your Dolby Atmos enabled receiver or amplifier that are designated for height effects. To get the best effect from Dolby Atmos, we recommend using a pair of SP-BS22A-LR speakers for the front left/right speakers and another pair for the surround left/right speakers. Check your Dolby Atmos enabled AV Receiver specifications for supported Dolby Atmos speaker configurations. If you prefer, you can use a single pair of SP-BS22A-LR speakers for the front left/right channels, typically combined with a pair of SP-BS22LR speakers for the surround left/right channels. Guidelines for Best Atmos Setup In order to use the Dolby Atmos enabled capability of these speakers the listening room ceiling should have a horizontal flat hard surface (for audio reflection) and a height of 8' to 14'. If your room does not meet these requirements standard ceiling or in-ceiling speakers are required. The most important part of the Atmos speaker setup is making sure that the top-mounted height driver arrays are positioned at your seated ear height or higher, but lower than half the height of the room, as seen below. When using the SP-BS22A-LR compact speakers, you can easily optimize the position of the height channel drivers by choosing a stand of the appropriate height. BASS MANAGEMENT SETTINGS The SP-BS22A-LR is designed to reproduce sounds above about 50 Hz. We strongly recommend you use it with a subwoofer. Without a subwoofer, you won't get much bass and you may damage the SP-BS22A-LRs woofers if you play deep bass notes at high volume. It is also important to use a suitable crossover that will filter deep bass frequencies out of the SP-BS22A-LR. Using the crossover inside your receiver usually delivers the best results. If you have a subwoofer, use the Speaker Setup menu in your receiver to set the subwoofer to ON or YES, then set the size of the SP-BS22A-LR to SMALL. This applies whether the SP-BS22A-LR is used for front or rear channels, or both. If your receiver allows you to choose the subwoofer crossover frequency, set it to 80 Hz. INSTALLATION PRECAUTIONS • Do not install this speaker system near a stove or other heating appliances, or put it in a place exposed to the sun. Such locations may cause the cabinet to change color and the speaker system to break down. • When you place the SP-BS22A-LR atop a stand, it's a good idea to secure it to the stand with reusable poster adhesive or something similar. This will help keep the speaker from falling off the stand if it is bumped accidentally. Pioneer will not be responsible for any accidents or damage that may result from improper installation. CABINET MAINTENANCE • Use a polishing cloth or dry cloth to wipe off dust and dirt. • When the cabinet is very dirty, clean with a soft cloth dipped in some neutral cleanser diluted with six parts water to one part cleanser, and then wipe again with a dry cloth. Do not use furniture wax or cleaners. • Never use paint thinner, benzine, insecticide sprays and other chemicals on or near the cabinets, since these will corrode the surfaces. Check your AV Receiver specifications for supported Dolby Atmos speaker configurations.
