4. MAINTAIN CONTROL a. Use the shoulder strap and keep a firm grip on the tool with both hands. A properly adjusted shoulder strap will support the weight of the tool, freeingyour arms and hands to control and guide the cutting motion. b. Keep feet comfortably spread apart and braced for the possibility of a sudden, rapid thrust of the tool. Do not overreach. Keep firm footing and balance. C. CUTTING METHODS 1. Establish a rhythmic cutting procedure. a. Plant feet firmly, comfortably apart. b. Cut while swinging the upper part of your body from right to left. c. Move forward to the next area to be cut after the return swing and plant feet once more. 2. Use the 8 o'clock to 10 o'clock position for cutting. Figure 12 . 3. Stop the engine and blade, then unclip the shoulder strap from the tool before clearing cut material. 4. To reduce the chance of material wrapping around the blade, follow these steps: a. Cut at full throttle. b. Swing the tool into material to be cut from your right to left. c. Avoid the material just cut as you make the return swing. c. Keep the blade below waist level. It will be easier to maintain control of the tool. d. Do not raise the engine above your waist as the blade can come dangerously close to your body. e. Do not swing the tool with such force that you are in danger of losing your bal. ance.
