If the region number printed on the DVD does not correspond to the region number of this unit, it cannot play that disc. The region number of this unit is 1. Audio CDs CD-R CD-RW [8cm/12cm disc] Compatible Title, Chapter and Tracks • DVDs are divided into "titles" and "chapters". If the disc has more than one movie on it, each movie would be a separate "title". "Chapters" are sections of titles. • Audio CDs are divided into "tracks". A "track" is usually one song on an Audio CD. Disc Function or Operation that is Not Available When the appears on the screen, it indicates that the function or operation attempted is not available at that time. This occurs because the DVD manufacturer determines the specific functions of DVDs. Certain functions may not be available on some DVDs. Be sure to read the documentation provided with the DVD. Notes on Unauthorized Discs You may not be able to play some DVDs on this unit, particularly if they were purchased from outside your geographic area or made for business purposes. Soundtracks encoded in Dolby Digital can reproduce from one to 5.1 discrete channels of excellent quality audio. The unit automatically recognizes the Dolby Digital bitstream and provides a downmix suitable for two-channel listening. An additional Dolby Digital decoder is required for reproduction of the discrete multi-channel soundtracks available on many DVDs. Manufactured under license from Dolby Laboratories. Please visit online help at www.RCAav.com 2 remote control Using the Remote Control • Point the remote control at the REMOTE SENSOR located on the unit. • When using this unit in very bright light, the infrared REMOTE CONTROL SENSOR may not work properly. • The recommended operating range for remote operation is about 16 feet (5 meters). To Change Remote Batteries 1. Open the battery door. Battery Replacement When the batteries become weak, the operating distance of the remote control will be greatly reduced and you will need to replace the batteries. 2. Insert two AAA size batteries. Notes: • If the remote control is not going to be used for a long time, remove the batteries to avoid damage caused by battery leakage corrosion. • When discarding batteries, environmental problems must be considered and local rules or laws governing the disposal of these batteries must be strictly followed. • Do not mix old and new batteries. Do not mix ALKALINE, standard (CARBONZINC), or rechargeable (Ni-Cd, Ni-MH, etc.) batteries. WARNING: • Do not dispose of the battery in fire or it may explode or leak. • Batteries shall not be exposed to excessive heat such as sunshine, fire or the like. CAUTION: Danger of explosion if battery is incorrectly replaced. Replace only with the same or equivalent type. troubleshooting guide SYMPTOM No power. The remote control does not function. No sound or only a very low-level sound is heard. No picture or abnormal color. CAUSE (AND REMEDY) • Ensure the AC power cord is connected. • The unit is not turned on. • Remove any obstacles between the remote and the unit • Use the remote near the unit. • Point the remote at the remote sensor on the unit. • Replace the batteries in the remote with new one. • Make sure that you select ON mode. • The system is in pause mode. Press the PLAY button to return to normal play mode. • The unit is in fast-forward or fast-reverse mode. Press the PLAY button to return to normal play mode. • Make sure the AUDIO output is correct. • Make sure the audio cable is connected securely. • The region number of the disc doesn't match the region number of this unit. No output on your HDMI TV. Severe hum or noise is heard. The disc does not play. The DVD door cannot open. • The TV is not set to receive DVD signal output. • The video/HDMI cable is not connected securely. • The TV is not turned on. • Clean the disc. • Check connection between HDMI TV and the unit. • Replace the HDMI cable with a better one. Bad HDMI cable can cause data lost. • Press HDMI key on remote handset several times to toggle among different HD OUTPUT. • Check the connections. • The plugs and jacks are dirty. Wipe them with a cloth slightly moistened with alcohol. • Clean the disc. • There is no disc inside. ("No Disc" appears on the screen). • Insert the disc correctly with the playback side facing down. • Clean the disc. • The unit and disc region number are incompatible. • Condensation may have formed inside the unit due to a sudden change in temperature. Wait about an hour for it to clear and try again. • Reset the unit, press the STANDBY/ON button to turn off the unit, wait for a few seconds, then restart the unit. maintenance Cleaning the Disc A defective or soiled disc inserted into the unit can cause sound to drop out during playback. Handle the disc by holding its inner and outer edges. • Do NOT touch the surface of the unlabeled side of the disc. • Do NOT stick paper or tape on the surface. • Do NOT expose the disc to direct sunlight or excessive heat. • Clean the disc before playback. Wipe the disc from the center outward with a cleaning cloth. • NEVER use solvents such as benzine or alcohol to clean the disc. • Do NOT use irregular shaped discs (example: heart shaped, octagonal, etc.). They may cause malfunctions. Cleaning the Unit • Be sure to turn the unit off and disconnect the AC power cord before maintaining the unit. • Wipe the unit with a dry soft cloth. If the surfaces are extremely dirty, wipe clean with a cloth that has been dipped in a weak soap-and-water solution and wrung out thoroughly, then wipe with a dry cloth. • Never use alcohol, benzine, thinner, cleaning fluid or other chemicals. Do NOT use compressed air to remove dust. Important Note Before transporting the unit, remove the disc from the disc compartment. 3 control reference guide Remote Control 1. COMPONENT VIDEO OUT jacks (Y, Pb & Pr) 4 SETUP and connections CONNECTING TO A TV The unit can be connected to your TV in several different ways, depending on the design of your TV. Note: Use only one of the connection methods listed below for connecting to your TV. Method A (AV jacks) will give good picture quality. Method B (Component Video) will give better picture quality. Method C (HDMI) will give best picture quality. A. RCA AUDIO/VIDEO JACKS 1. Using the red, white and yellow connection on the AV cable (included), connect the VIDEO OUT and left/right AUDIO OUT jacks on the unit to the VIDEO IN and left/ right AUDIO IN jacks on your TV. 2. Using a S-video cable (not included). S-Video will give slightly better picture quality than a standard (yellow RCA-type) AV connection. If your TV has an S-Video connection, you may prefer to use this connection. COMPONENT VIDEO OUT (DVD) AUDIO IN Some TVs or monitors are equipped with component video inputs. Using the red and white connection on an audio cable (not included), connect the left/ right AUDIO OUT jacks on your unit to the left/right AUDIO IN jacks on your TV. Audio cable Using a component video cable (not (red and white) included), connect the Y VIDEO OUT jack (green plug) on your unit to the Y VIDEO IN jack on your TV, the Pb VIDEO OUT jack (blue plug) on your unit to the Pb VIDEO IN jack on your TV and the Pr VIDEO OUT jack (red plug) on your unit to the Pr VIDEO IN jack on your TV to view the highest quality picture playback. white red green blue red red white red blue green VIDEO IN TV Component video cable (green/blue/red) C. CONNECTING TO A DISPLAY (Using an HDMI cable) For TVs that support it, HDMI can provide the best quality audio and video output (depending on media source), and so is the preferred connection type. The HDMI cable incorporates both audio and video signals, so you will have just one cable running from the unit to your TV. • Press the HDMI button on the remote control to change output signals as below: 480P (progressive) 720P (progressive) 1080i (interlace) 1080P (progressive) Using an HDMI cable (not included), connect the HDMI OUT jack on your unit to the HDMI IN jack on your TV or HDMI-compatible display. • Set the output resolution (using the HDMI button on the remote control) to match the maximum resolution of your TV. • When using HDMI connection to HDMI TV, please set the DIGITAL AUDIO under Audio Notes: • Refer to your TV Owner's Manual to the determine the maximum resolution your TV can support. If the picture quality or colors on TV appear distorted, you may have set the output resolution on the DVD player to too high a value. • When you connect the DVD player to your TV, be sure to turn off the power and unplug both units from the wall outlet before making any connections. • If you have a HDMI (with HDCP) equipped monitor or display, you can connect it to this player using an HDMI cable. CONNECTING TO OPTIONAL EQUIPMENT (AMPLIFIER or HOME THEATER) A. ANALOG CONNECTION Using an audio cable (not included), connect the left/right AUDIO OUT jack on your unit to the AUDIO IN jack on your other source.
