Stardraw Control Systems Guide This guide, includes an introduction to using external control systems with HAL. It also discusses an example HAL1 configuration and an example Stardraw Control application and driver that communicates with a Halogen/HAL Control Server. In addition, an appendix is included with reference information on the HAL external control message protocol and how to use a telnet client to monitor and troubleshoot the operation of a control system at the message protocol level. Following are the recommended steps for learning what you should know and do before beginning your design: 1. Perform your initial product research, learning about the system's hardware components and the basics of how the software works. "Introduction to the HAL System" on page 8 is a good place to start. Be sure to review the "Recommended Workflow for Creating a HAL System" on page 174 to get a general sense of the HAL System design process. If you have ever used Rane's Drag Net product, you may want to review "Transitioning from Drag Net" on page 188. 2. Familiarize yourself with the key audio design features of the HAL System. Do this now-BEFORE you begin your design! You could save yourself days of time-really! The HAL System includes some tremendous time savers that you could miss out on if you simply jump in and create your system using lastcentury techniques. These key areas include: 6
