B. Engines with Recoil Starters If you have an electric starter, see "A. Engines with Electric Starters" instructions on page 6. Only one of the following two sections will apply to your engine. If you have a manual recoil starter, see Table 4. Table 4. Engines with Recoil Starters If your engine has: Primer Bulb Only Choke Only Go to: Section B.I Section B.II I. Primer Bulb Only 1. To avoid carbon monoxide poisoning, be sure engine is outdoors in a well-ventilated area. 2. Move equipment control (see equipment manufacturer's instructions) or engine throttle control to "FAST" position, if present. See Figure 16. 3. When starting a cold engine, push primer bulb firmly with your thumb 3 times, allowing primer bulb to return completely to original position between pushes. See Figure 17. NOTES Cooler temperatures may require pushing primer bulb firmly with your thumb 5 times. DO NOT use primer to restart a warm engine after a short shutdown. Doing so will flood the engine and may result in equipment malfunction. WARNING When pulling starter rope, the rope can unexpectedly jerk back toward engine causing serious injury. To avoid this risk, carefully follow these instructions: 4. Grasp starter cord handle. See Figure 18 on page 9. Afterward, continue reading instructions below. a. Pull rope out slowly until you feel drag. b. Next, pull rope with one rapid full arm stroke. c. Return rope slowly to original position. Primer Bulb Only
1.

position, if present. See Figure 16.
