II. Independent Speed and Choke Controls 1. To avoid carbon monoxide poisoning, be sure engine is outdoors in a well-ventilated area. 2. Move independent speed control to "FAST" position and set independent choke control to "FULL CHOKE" position (see equipment manufacturer's instructions). See Figures 14, 16, and 17. NOTES Generator and Water Pump applications may have the independent choke lever mounted on the engine. See Figure 18. If restarting a warm engine after a short shutdown, move independent speed control to "FAST" position and move independent choke control to "NO CHOKE" position. ! WARNIINNGG When pulling starter rope, the rope can unexpectedly jerk back toward engine causing serious injury. To avoid this risk, carefully follow these instructions: 3. Grasp starter cord handle. See Figure 15. a. Pull rope out slowly until you feel drag. b. Without allowing the rope to retract, continue pulling rope with one rapid full arm stroke. c. Return rope slowly to original position. NOTES Following the instructions listed in the steps above avoids potential damage to the recoil mechanism. If engine fails to start after 3 pulls repeat steps 2 thru 3. 4. When engine starts: a. Move independent choke control to "1/2 CHOKE" position until engine runs smoothly. b. Next, move independent choke control to "NO CHOKE" position. 5. Move independent speed control to desired speed in "RUN" range. NOTES If engine starts but falters when independent choke control is moved to "NO CHOKE" position: a. Momentarily move independent choke control back to "FULL CHOKE" position. b. Next, move independent choke control to "1/2 CHOKE" position until engine runs smoothly. c. Finally, move independent choke control to "NO CHOKE" position. If engine dies after independent choke control is moved to "NO CHOKE" position repeat steps 2 thru 5 to restart engine. 6. If engine fires but does NOT continue to run, move independent choke control to "NO CHOKE" position and pull starter rope again. 7. 1. Be sure engine is upright and level.	7
2. Unscrew oil fill cap from oil filler tube and wipe dipstick clean. See Figure 7.	7
3. Screw oil fill cap back into oil filler tube. Tighten securely.	7
4. Unscrew and remove oil fill cap from oil filler tube. Note oil level. If oil reading on dipstick is below “ADD” mark, slowly add oil to reach “FULL” level. See Figure 6 on on page 4. Afterward, continue reading instructions below.	7
5. Screw oil fill cap back into oil filler tube. Tighten securely.	7
6. Wipe away any spilled oil.	7
C. Filling Fuel Tank	7
1. Stop engine and allow it to cool before refueling.	7
2. Be sure engine is outdoors and in a well-ventilated area.	7
3. Clean area around fuel fill cap and remove fuel fill cap.	7
4. Using an approved red GASOLINE container, add fuel slowly, being careful to avoid spilling. DO NOT overfill fuel tank. Leave space in the tank to allow fuel to expand without overflowing.	7
5. Replace fuel fill cap securely and wipe up spilled fuel before starting engine. If fuel is spilled DO NOT start engine. Move machine away from area of spillage. Avoid creating any source of ignition until fuel vapors are gone.	7

1. Be sure you find the correct drain plug location, if present (see equipment manufacturer’s instructions). See Figure 19.	12
2. Carefully disconnect spark plug wire and keep it away from spark plug. See \	12
3. Be sure the fuel fill cap is on and is tightened securely.	12

5. Place approved recyclable oil container under oil drain plug (see equipment manufacturer’s instructions).	12
6. Remove oil drain plug and drain oil into an approved container. See Figure 19.	12
7. Install oil drain plug and tighten securely.	12
8. Fill with recommended oil. See \	12
9. Wipe away any spilled oil.	12
10. Carefully disconnect spark plug wire from grounding post, if provided.	12
11. Connect spark plug wire to spark plug before attempting to start engine.	12
B. Removing Debris from Engine	13
1. Remove air cleaner cover and filters. See Figure 21	13
2. Remove debris from air inlet, air cleaner cover and air intake screen.	13
3. Inspect filter(s) for discoloration or dirt accumulation. If either is present, see \	13
4. Replace air cleaner cover and filters.	13

1. Clean area around spark plug.	13

3. Replace spark plug if porcelain is cracked or if electrodes are:	13
4. Check electrode gap with wire feeler gauge and set gap to-.030 in. (0.76 mm) if necessary. See Figure 23.	13

b. Repeat once. (This will distribute oil throughout the cylinder to prevent corrosion during storage.)	17
6. Remove rag covering spark plug hole.	17

8. Carefully disconnect spark plug wire from grounding post, if provided.	17
9. Connect spark plug wire to spark plug before attempting to start engine.	17

Independent Speed and Choke Controls

To avoid carbon monoxide poisoning, be sure engine is

outdoors in a well-ventilated area.

Move independent speed control to “FAST” position

and set independent choke control to “FULL CHOKE”

position

(see equipment manufacturer’s instructions).

See Figures 14, 16, and 17.

NOTES

Generator and Water Pump applications may have the

independent choke lever mounted on the engine.

See Figure 18.

If restarting a warm engine after a short shutdown, move

independent speed control to “FAST” position and move

independent choke control to “NO CHOKE” position.

Finally, move independent choke control to

If engine dies after independent choke control is moved to

“NO CHOKE” position repeat steps 2 thru 5 to restart

engine.

If engine fires but does NOT continue to run, move

independent choke control to “NO CHOKE” position

and pull starter rope again.

If engine fails to start after 3 attempts in the “NO

CHOKE” position, move independent

choke control to

“FULL CHOKE” position and pull starter rope again.

If engine does NOT start after following steps 1 thru 7,

contact your Authorized TecumsehPower Servicing

Dealer. DO NOT attempt to start or troubleshoot this

engine in any other way
