Learning the Basics Using the keyboard 81 F1 through F12 are called function keys because they execute programmed functions when pressed. Used in combination with the Fn key, function keys marked with icons execute specific functions on the computer. For more information, see "Fn-esse" on page 161, or "Hot Keys" on page 240. Hot keys When used in combination with the Fn key, function keys marked with icons run programmed functions specific to your computer. For more information, see "Hot Keys" on page 240. Windows® special keys Start key Application key Sample Windows® special keys Your computer's keyboard has two keys, located at the topright of the keyboard, that have special functions in the operating system: ❖ Start key-Opens the Start menu ❖ Application key-Has the same function as the secondary mouse (or TouchPad) button Overlay keys The keys with numbers and symbols on the front of them form the numeric and cursor overlay. This overlay lets you enter numeric data or control the cursor as you would using the 10-key keypad on a desktop computer's keyboard.
