When you have finished making adjustments, g start sewing. • For details, refer to "Starting to sew" (page 29). Memo ● For details on selecting character stitches, refer to "Selecting characters" (page 64). CAUTION ● After adjusting the stitch width, slowly turn the handwheel toward you (counterclockwise) and check that the needle does not touch the presser foot. If the needle hits the presser foot, the needle may bend or break. ● If the stitches are bunched together, increase the stitch length. Continuing to sew with the stitches bunched together may cause the needle to bend or break. Starting to sew Raise the needle by turning the handwheel a toward you (counterclockwise) so that the mark on the wheel points up. (With models equipped with (needle position button), raise the needle by pressing once or twice.) 2 or a Mark b Needle position button Raise the presser foot lever. b a Presser foot lever Place the fabric under the presser foot, pass c the thread under the presser foot, and then pull out about 5 cm (2 inch) of thread toward the rear of the machine. a 5 cm (2 inch) While holding the end of the thread and the d fabric with your left hand, turn the handwheel toward you (counterclockwise) with your right hand to lower the needle to the starting point of the stitching. 29
