The RAID Assistant is an intuitive, wizard-like utility that can automatically
configure the disk arrays. In Automatic Configuration mode, the utility operates
interactively with the user to answer a few simple questions and then
automatically configures the disk arrays.
The Assisted Configuration and the Manual Configuration modes provide more
control over drive group setup or individual configuration parameters. The
Assisted Configuration leads you step-by-step through the configuration process,
providing more interactions than the Automatic Configuration option. The Manual
Configuration mode provides four screens for configuring and setting up the disk
arrays.
Management Functions
The FCArray Assistant Server software executes the management instructions
specified by the FCArray Assistant Client. The FCArray Assistant Server software
provides fault management information, reliable messaging, and operating system
support. The FCArray Assistant Client software manages the individual disk
arrays and drives (with the appropriate authentication), with the information
provided by FCArray Assistant Server software. The FCArray Assistant Server
executes the management instructions specified by the FCArray Assistant Client.
Maintenance Functions
The FCArray Assistant Client software performs maintenance on individual disk
arrays and drives (with the appropriate authentication), by means of the graphical
user interface. This includes removing physical devices from operation in a
functioning disk array (also known as "killing" or off-lining a drive), rebuilding
drives, selecting hot spares, and initiating a check of consistency (or parity)
information on arrays that are configured to support redundancy. The FCArray
Assistant Server executes the maintenance instructions specified by the FCArray
Assistant Client.
Client/Server Requirements
Due to the client/server nature of the FCArray Assistant application, the FCArray
Assistant Server software must be installed in one or more HP NetServers prior to
the FCArray Assistant Client software installation. The FCArray Assistant Client
software will not install properly or operate, if it can’t recognize the FCArray
Assistant Server software on the network.
The hardware and software requirements for installation and operation of the
FCArray Assistant Server/Client software are provided in the following topics.
