This Quick Start Guide is intended to highlight a typical installation; these instructions are not intended to be comprehensive. Because each application is unique, it is the responsibility of the purchaser, designer, installer and end user to ensure that the total door system is safe for intended use. Please consult the manual for further information at: www.liftmaster.com. This garage door opener is compatible with: • Doors that use a torsion bar and springs. The torsion bar must be 1 in. (2.5 cm) diameter. NOT compatible with reverse wound drums. • Standard lift sectional doors using 4-6 in. (10-15 cm) diameter drums. • 4-6 in. (10-15 cm) straight drums. May not be used on doors less than 400 lbs (181 kg) or doors more than 1,100 lbs (498 kg). • Standard lift sectional doors up to 14 ft (4.3 m) high. • High lift doors up to 84 in. (214.4 cm) high using a partial taper, high-lift drum. • High lift sectional doors using 8 in. (20 cm) diameter taper drum. • Vertical lift sectional doors using 8 in. (20 cm) diameter full taper drums. THIS QUICK START IS NOT INTENDED TO REPLACE THE MANUAL, BUT SERVES AS A REMINDER FOR THOSE FAMILIAR WITH THE MANUAL AND THE INSTALLATION OF THIS PRODUCT. 2. READ AND FOLLOW ALL INSTALLATION WARNINGS AND INSTRUCTIONS IN THE INSTALLATION MANUAL. 3. Install garage door opener ONLY on properly balanced and lubricated garage door. An improperly balanced door may NOT reverse when required and could result in SEVERE INJURY or DEATH. 4. ALL repairs to cables, spring assemblies and other hardware MUST be made by a trained door systems technician BEFORE installing opener. 5. Disable ALL locks and remove ALL ropes connected to garage door BEFORE installing opener to avoid entanglement. 6. Where possible, install the door opener 7 feet (2.13 m) or more above the floor. 7. Mount the emergency release within reach, but at least 6 feet (1.83 m) above the floor and avoiding contact with vehicles to avoid accidental release. 8. NEVER connect garage door opener to power source until instructed to do so. 9. NEVER wear watches, rings or loose clothing while installing or servicing opener. They could be caught in garage door or opener mechanisms. 10. Install wall-mounted garage door control: • within sight of the garage door. • out of reach of small children at a minimum height of 5 feet (1.53 m) above floors, landings, steps or any other adjacent walking surface. • away from ALL moving parts of the door. 11. Install the emergency release marking. Attach the marking on or next to the emergency release. Install the entrapment warning placard next to the door control in a prominent location. 12. Place emergency release/safety reverse test label in plain view on inside of garage door. 13. Upon completion of installation, test safety reversal system. Door MUST reverse on contact with a 1-1/2" (3.8 cm) high object (or a 2x4 laid flat) on the floor. WARNING: This product can expose you to chemicals including lead, which are known to the State of California to cause cancer or birth defects or other reproductive harm. For more information go to www.P65Warnings.ca.gov. STEP 1 PLANNING Inspect the proposed installation area to make sure it meets the requirements below. The garage door opener can be installed on either side of the door. The illustrations shown are for installation on the left side. 3" (7.6 cm) minimum 8.5" (21.6 cm) minimum Inspect the torsion bar while raising and lowering the door; there should be no noticeable shifting or vibrating of the door. If the movement is not corrected, the life of the garage door opener will be greatly reduced. 2.5" (6.4 cm) minimum Wall Torsion bar Torsion bar must extend at least 1.5" (3.81 cm) Wall or obstruction Check the seal on the bottom of the door. Any gap between the floor and the bottom of the door must not exceed 1/4" (6 mm). Electrical outlet must be within 6' (1.83 m) of installation Lift the door halfway up. Release the door. If balanced, it should stay in place, supported entirely by its springs. Doors heavier than 650 lbs. should NOT open or fall rapidly. Tools Needed 6" 3/8" 9/16" 5/16" 1/4" Additional Items You May Need Extension brackets (Model 041A5281-1) or wood blocks: Extension brackets or wood blocks may be needed to install the safety reversing sensors. Fastening hardware: Floor mounting of the safety reversing sensors requires hardware not provided. 90˚ connector for cable conduit or flex cable adapter: Required for permanent wiring. LiftMaster.com myLiftMaster.com STEP 2 INSTALLATION (CONTINUED) Install the MyQ® LED Remote Light MyQ Remote LED Light must be installed to enable use of Timer-to- Close or MyQ Smartphone Control of the door. The light MUST be visible if you're standing in the doorway of the garage. Install the light within 6 ft. (1.83 m) of an electrical outlet so that the cord and light are away from moving parts. The light has been factory programmed to operate with your opener. Gray C White Red B A Install the Door Control 1. Install door control within sight of garage door, out of reach of small children at a minimum height of 5 ft. (1.5 m) above floors, landings, steps or any other adjacent walking surface, and away from ALL moving parts of door. 2. Wire to the garage door opener, see WIRING AND POWER (C). 3. Fasten the warning placard next to the door control. Screw 6ABx1-1/4" (2) Drywall Anchors (2) Screw 6-32x1" (gang box) (2) C Light Lens Screws Install the Protector System® The safety reversing sensors must be connected and aligned correctly before the garage door will move in the down direction. This is a required safety device and cannot be disabled. If your track is too large, the included extension bracket (Model 041A5281-1) or wood blocks can be used. 1. Install and align the brackets so the safety reversing sensors will face each other across the garage door, with the beam no higher than 6 in. (15 cm) above the floor. 2. Wire to the garage door opener, see WIRING AND POWER (D). 3. Strip 7/16 in. (11 mm) of insulation from each set of wires. Separate the wires. Twist the white wires together. Connect Power To reduce the risk of electric shock, your garage door opener has a grounding type plug with a third grounding pin. This plug will only fit into a grounding type outlet. If the plug doesn't fit into your outlet, contact a qualified electrician to install the proper outlet. 1. Plug in the garage door opener into a grounded outlet. 2. Check to make sure the LEDs in both sensors are glowing steadily. The LEDs in both sensors will glow steadily if they are aligned and wired correctly. If permanent wiring is required by your local code, refer to the manual. Install the Battery Backup 1. Unplug the garage door opener and remove lower door. 2. Connect red OR black lead from garage door opener to one of the matching battery terminals. Connect the battery jumper to the other lead on the same battery. 3. Connect other end of jumper cable to the second battery. Connect the remaining black or red lead from the opener to the second battery. 4. Slide both batteries back into the compartment, and plug in the opener. Antenna Sending Sensor Amber LED Receiving Sensor (will have sticker on back) Green LED NOTE: Ensure the long antenna is routed down through the small opening in the lower left corner of the battery holder. Assemble the Garage Door Opener Loosen the collar's set screws and lock nuts. Slide the collar onto the opener's shaft until it stops. Ensure the collar's screws align with two shaft holes and are accessible when connected to the torsion bar. Tighten the two closest set screws to the operator such that the tips are just starting to protrude through the holes of the operator shaft. Loosely attach the mounting bracket to the garage door opener on the same side as the collar. Screw #10-32 (2) Flush Mount the Garage Door Opener 1. Close the garage door completely. Slide the garage door opener onto the torsion bar. Ensure the collar does NOT touch the bearing. Use a level to align the garage door opener. 2. Make sure the mounting bracket is located on a solid surface. If installing on drywall, the mounting bracket MUST be attached to a stud. Mark and drill 3/16" pilot holes. 3. For a solid shaft with keyway, place the provided 1 in. key in the keyway. Tighten the 2 set screws 1/4 to 1/2 turn after they make contact with the shaft or the key. For a hollow shaft, tighten the set screws 3/4 to 1 full turn after making contact with the bar. 4. Operator Set Screws: Fully tighten the two set screws closest to the operator with an additional 1/4 to 1/2 turn. 5. Secure the mounting bracket to the wall using 14-10 x 2 in. screws. Tighten the mounting bracket to the garage door opener. To prevent the screws from coming loose, lock the screws in placed by tightening all 4 lock nuts until the lock washer is fully flattened against the collar. Set screws .25" (.6 cm) min. space between bearing and collar Solid torsion bar STEP 2 INSTALLATION 10 feet (3.05 m) max. Mounting bracket Hollow torsion bar 6 feet (1.83 m) above the floor min. Attach the Emergency Release Rope and Handle 1. Thread one end of the rope through the hole in the top of the red handle so "NOTICE" reads right side up. Secure with an overhand knot at least 1" (2.5 cm) from the end of the rope to prevent slipping. 2. Insert the other end of the rope through the loop in the emergency release cable and secure with an overhand knot. 3. Install the Emergency Release Marking. Attach the marking on or next to the Emergency release. Install the Automatic Garage Door Lock Mount the lock above one of the door rollers. The third roller from the bottom of the door is ideal for most installations. Drill holes in the track according to the template provided. Wire to the garage door opener, see WIRING AND POWER (A). Door Track A Template Screw 1/4"-20x1/2" (2) Approx. 3" (7.6 cm) Roller Screw 14-10 x 2" (2) Install on the same side as the garage door opener if possible. STEP 4 ADJUSTMENTS Identify Door Profile To identify the door profile number, measure the full drum diameter based on the images below. NOTE: This step is important to ensure the proper operation of the unit. To prevent possible SERIOUS INJURY or DEATH, follow instructions to select and set door profile for safe and proper operation. Automatic Force Set Up Once both the up and down positions have been set, the Safety Reversing Sensors will reconnect and become operational. Then, the opener will enter a force-sensing operation by automatically moving the door open and close. The garage door opener will sound an audible and visual alert before automatically opening and closing the door. The garage door opener will beep three times, confirming that the Automatic Force Setup completed successfully. Adjustment is complete. If you hear one long beep after the door attempts to move, then the Automatic Force Set Up has not completed successfully. Please start over at step 1 of Program the Travel. Standard Lift Sectional Door • Door Profile 1 = Heavy Weight Door* with a 4 in. (10.16 cm) drum • Door Profile 2 = Standard Weight Door with a 4 in. (10.16 cm) drum. • Door Profile 3 = Heavy Weight Door with a 6 in. (15.24 cm) drum. • Door Profile 4 = Standard Weight Door with a 6 in. (15.24 cm) drum. *NOTE: Drum sizes vary by manufacturer. For Standard Lift Section Doors: • Drums less than or equal to 5 in. (12.7 cm), use 4 in. (10.16 cm) drum profile. • Drums more than 5 in. (12.7 cm), use 6 in. (15.24 cm) drum profile. Factors that increase door weight are those with solid wood interiors, wood veneer exteriors, glass windows, insulation, reinforcement materials, and/or decorations. High Lift Door • Door Profile 5 = Tapered drum with rails that raise to a higher elevation. 8 inch diameter Vertical Lift Sectional Door • Door Profile 5 = Tapered Drum with rails raising vertically above the opening. 8 inch diameter Test the Safety Reversal System 1. With the door fully open, place a 1-1/2" (3.8 cm) board (or a 2x4 laid flat) on the floor, centered under the garage door. 2. Press the remote control push button to close the door. The door MUST reverse when it makes contact with the board. If the door stops but does not reverse: 1. Review the installation instructions provided to insure all steps were followed; 2. Repeat Program the Travel (see Adjustment Step 2); 3. Repeat the Safety Reversal test. If the test continues to fail, call a trained door systems technician. 1-1/2" (3.8 cm) board (or a 2x4 laid flat) 4-6 inch diameter Set Door Profile 1. To enter Set Door Profile mode, press and hold the black button for one second. The UP and DOWN buttons turn a solid color. 2. To set Door Profile, press the UP and DOWN buttons. The Learn LED button blinks and beeps as you change the setting. 3. The number of Learn LED button blinks indicates which profile you have selected. There is no preset door profile setting. 4. Press and release the Black button to set the Door Profile. This process is now complete. Proceed to the Travel Learn mode. Blinks 1 Drum Size 4-5 in. Door Type Sectional Unbalanced Door Weight 600-850 lbs. 2 4-5 in. Sectional 400-600 lbs. 3 5-6 in. Sectional 850-1100 lbs. 4 5-6 in. Sectional 400-850 lbs. 5 8 in. High lift Vertical lift: or vertical 400-700 lbs. Exiting Door Profile Number Setting If there is no selection within 4.5 minutes, the Door Profile selection mode will be cancelled with a long beep. High lift: 400-700 lbs. *Ensure the garage door is in compliance with drum load rating. UP Button Black Button DOWN Button To prevent possible SERIOUS INJURY or DEATH, after ANY changes to the door profile, reprogram limits. Program the Travel NOTE: While programming the travel, the UP and DOWN buttons can be used to move the door as needed. During the Automatic Force Setup, the door will automatically open and close. 1. Press and hold the UP Button until the door is in the desired UP position. 2. Once the door is in the desired UP position, press and release the Adjust Button to start the Auto Program Limit Sequence. The garage door opener will sound an audible and visual alert before automatically opening and closing the door. The opener will automatically determine the DOWN position of the door. The garage door opener will sound an audible and visual alert before automatically opening the door partially and closing the door again to refine the DOWN position. Program the Travel is now complete. NOTE: If the garage door opener remote work light flashes 5 times, then programming has timed out and the door travel limits have not been set. Please restart the program the travel process. Test the Protector System® 1. Press the remote control push button to open the door. 2. Place the opener carton in the path of the door. 3. Press the remote control push button to close the door. The door will not move more than 1". The garage door opener will not close from a remote if the indicator light in either sensor is off (alerting you to the fact that the sensor is misaligned or obstructed). Safety Reversing Sensor Safety Reversing Sensor Test the Automatic Garage Door Lock 1. With the garage door fully closed, the automatic garage door lock bolt should be protruding through the track. 2. Open the garage door. The automatic garage door lock should retract before the garage door begins to move. 3. Close the garage door. When the garage door reaches the fully closed position, the automatic garage door lock should automatically activate to secure the door. Disengage the automatic garage door lock by sliding the manual release to the open position. Manual Release Locked Position To Open the Door Manually Disengage any door locks before proceeding. The door should be fully closed if possible. Pull down on the emergency release handle until a click is heard from the garage door opener and lift the door manually. To reconnect the door to the garage door opener, pull the emergency release handle straight down a second time until a click is heard from the garage door opener.
