Shooting basics Using the flash Fill-in flash ( ) The flash always fires every time the shutter button is released. This mode is useful when you want to minimize shadows around the subject (such as the shade of tree leaves on the subject's face), in backlight condition, or under artificial light such as a fluorescent lamp. 2 The fill-in flash may not have the desired effect under excessively bright light. Flash off ( ) The flash does not fire even in low light conditions. Use this mode in situations where flash photography is not desired or is prohibited, such as in an art museum. You can also use this mode when you want to shoot a naturallooking twilight or night scene. Since a slow shutter speed is automatically selected in low light situations when in the flash off mode, the use of a tripod is recommended to prevent your pictures from being blurred by camera movement. 56
